Who is at Risk for Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, a deadly disease that has been making headlines for the past decade, is found in exposure to asbestos airborne compounds. Sadly, controls under the control of asbestos use years ago, and no doubt even today, exposed millions of airborne fibers and as a result thousands became infected. It can safely be said that almost everyone in the world has been exposed to asbestos to varying degrees. Because of the unique nature of the disease, even those who have been exposed to it are at risk of contracting the disease. In fact, almost everyone has a certain risk of getting Mesothelioma. But this kind of statement probably transcends the boundaries of common sense. While it is certainly true that people who have experienced a small amount of asbestos for a short time have contracted the disease, this is rarely the norm. In fact, most cases of Mesothelioma involve people who are exposed to asbestos fibers that travel through the air for a long time and are strong. Industries at risk of long-term exposure as well as cuts to commercial shipbuilding, asbestos mining and milling, textile production, construction work, and brake repair workers. However, there are other factors that can affect the chances of contracting the disease. Among these are exposure to radiation. There have been cases where people who have been exposed to radiation have shown symptoms of mesothelioma and eventually contracted it. However, current studies attempting to confirm this relationship did not substantiate this claim. Another cause of the disease was the adoption of the Polio vaccine between 1955 and 1963. Some episodes of this vaccine were infected with Simian Virus 40 which has been found in a variety of rare cancers including Mesothelioma. Those who were involved in construction or who lived in houses in the Cappadocian region of Turkey are also at high risk. In this region, homeowners use Erionite, a type of silica zeolite stone. Exposure to fibrous fibers of this substance has resulted in an annual mortality rate of about 1% of mesothelioma deaths each year in Turkey. As a result, doctors have concluded that genes play a key role in determining whether a patient has the disease or not. How do you get Mesothelioma?

 

Dangerous mesothelioma begins when inhaled asbestos fibers cause inflammation, scars, and cell damage. All types of asbestos cause mesothelioma, but not all exposed to asbestos will develop mesothelioma.

 

There is a dose-response relationship between asbestos and mesothelioma development, which means your risk of getting cancer increases with every exposure. However, not everyone exposed to high levels of asbestos will develop the disease. Studies show that about 8% to 13% of asbestos workers end up with mesothelioma.

 

When asbestos fibers travel to different parts of the body, they can cause different types of mesothelioma. For example, when the fibers attach to the pleura, which is the lining of the lungs, pleural mesothelioma may develop. When fibers are inserted into the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity, peritoneal mesothelioma may develop.

 

Most people diagnosed with mesothelioma are exposed to asbestos while engaging in certain activities of the blue collar or in the military.

Occupational Asbestos exposure 

 

Asbestos exposure mainly occurs in the workplace. It can also occur at home and in the natural environment, but these types of exposure are less likely to lead to mesothelioma.

 

Asbestos was widely used in thousands of commercial, industrial, and domestic products. Examples include drywall, insulation, plumbing, glue and adhesives, ceiling tiles, cement and shingles.

 

The risk of asbestos-related illnesses is much higher for people who work with raw minerals or products that contain asbestos daily. Workers who build or use these products are exposed to asbestos in the workplace. Others, including members of the working family, have faced exposure at home.
