The bone marrow is the sponge tissue inside some of your bones, such as the hip and thigh bones. It contains stem cells. Stem cells can grow into red blood cells that carry oxygen in your body, white blood cells that fight infections, and platelets that help with blood loss. With osteoporosis, there are problems with stem cells or how they grow: In leukemia, leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. With aplastic anemia, the bone marrow does not produce red blood cells. In myeloproliferative disorders, the bone marrow produces too many white blood cells. Some diseases, such as lymphoma, can spread to the bone marrow and affect the production of blood cells.
