What is bone marrow disease and how it is diagnosed?

 

The bone marrow is the sponge tissue inside some of your bones, such as the hip and thigh bones. It contains stem cells. Stem cells can grow into red blood cells that carry oxygen in your body, white blood cells that fight infections, and platelets that help with blood loss. With osteoporosis, there are problems with stem cells or how they grow: In leukemia, leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells. With aplastic anemia, the bone marrow does not produce red blood cells. In myeloproliferative disorders, the bone marrow produces too many white blood cells. Some diseases, such as lymphoma, can spread to the bone marrow and affect the production of blood cells. Causes of rheumatoid arthritis include genetic and other genetic factors. Bone marrow tests include a blood and bone marrow test. Treatment depends on the disorder and how serious it is. It may include medication, blood transfusions, or a bone marrow transplant. Diagnosis and Testing: Types of blood tests: A health worker draws blood from a patient. Blood tests are very common. They help doctors diagnose certain diseases and conditions. They also help to evaluate the function of your organs and show how effective the treatment is. Total Blood Count (CBC) is one of the most common blood tests. It is usually done as part of a standardized test. This test measures many parts of your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. High or low red blood cell levels may be a sign of dehydration, anemia, or bleeding. Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to your entire body. High or low white blood cell levels can be a sign of infection, leukemia, or immune system disorders. White blood cells are part of your immune system, which fights infections and infections. High or lower platelet levels may be a sign of clotting disorder or blood disorders. Platelets are fragments of blood cells that help your blood to process. They stick together to seal cuts or fractures in the walls of blood vessels and stop bleeding. Low hemoglobin levels may be a sign of anemia, sickle cell disease, or thalassemia. Hemoglobin is a protein rich in red blood cells that carry oxygen. High hematocrit levels can mean dehydration. Low hematocrit levels may be a sign of anemia. Hematocrit is a measure of how much red blood cells take up in your blood. Medium corpuscular volume (MCV) levels that are lower than normal may be a sign of anemia or thalassemia. MCV is a measure of the average size of red blood cells. Your healthcare provider should discuss your results with you. They will advise you further if your results are outside the normal range for your team. Blood chemistry test / basic metabolic panel: The basic metabolic panel (BMP) is a test group that measures the various chemicals that occur naturally in the blood. These tests are usually done on a plasma fraction. Tests can give providers information about your organs, such as heart, kidneys, and liver. BMP includes blood glucose, calcium, and electrolyte tests, as well as blood tests that measure kidney function. Some of these tests require you to fast (do not eat any food) before the test, while others do not. Your provider will tell you how to prepare for the tests you have. Blood enzyme testing: Blood enzyme tests may be used to diagnose heart disease. Chemical Enzymes help control the chemical reaction in your body. There are many types of blood enzyme tests. These heart attacks include tests for troponin and creatine kinase (CK). Blood levels of troponin increase when a person has muscle damage, including heart muscle damage. In addition, an enzyme called CK-MB is released into the bloodstream when the heart muscle is damaged. High CK-MB levels in the blood can indicate that you have a heart attack. Lipoprotein Panel: The lipoprotein panel, also called the lipid panel or lipid profile, measures the levels of LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. Cholesterol and triglyceride levels higher or lower than normal may be signs of a higher risk of heart disease. The lipoprotein panel provides information about you: Total cholesterol: LDL ("bad") cholesterol, which is a major source of cholesterol formation and blockage in the arteries. HDL ("good") is cholesterol, which helps to lower the blockade of cholesterol in the arteries. Triglycerides, which are a type of fat in your blood. Most people will need to fast 9 to 12 hours before the lipoprotein panel. Blood clotting tests: A blood clotting test is sometimes called a coagulation panel. This test checks the proteins in your blood that affect the process of blood clotting. High or low levels may indicate that you are at risk of bleeding or clots in your bloodstream. Blood pressure monitoring is also used to monitor people taking medication to reduce the risk of blood clots. Warfarin and heparin are two examples of such drugs. Bone marrow tests: Bone marrow biology checks that your bone marrow is healthy and makes normal blood cell counts. Two bone marrow tests are aspiration and biopsy. Aspiration collects a small amount of bone marrow with a large needle. Biopsy tests are usually done at the same time as the aspirations test. A biopsy exam collects a small amount of bone marrow with a large needle. These tests can help determine the cause of low or high blood cell counts. They also play a key role in assessing the effectiveness of certain types of cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma. Prior to this procedure, be sure to tell your provider about the current medication you are taking, the known drug resistance, if you are pregnant, or if you have a bleeding problem.
