Mesothelioma is a very serious disease. One of the reasons it is so difficult is that most people do not know what puts them at risk for mesothelioma. The basic risk of developing mesothelioma is related to asbestos exposure. Asbestos is very common in many things so it is not very difficult to be exposed to it. The first reason to be exposed to asbestos is human activity. This is very common in several different professions. People working in the shipbuilding industry, asbestos mining and milling, asbestos production (such as textiles), construction and construction work, and braking are at risk. There are many other activities that include asbestos exposure. Men are often associated with a higher risk of mesothelioma because many asbestos-related activities are usually managed by men. Smoking increases the risk of mesothelioma by ten times. Mesothelioma is a lung cancer, and the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke damage the lungs irreparably. When cigarette smoke is accompanied by asbestos, the risks of developing mesothelioma and other lung cancers increase dramatically. People who smoke should make every effort to quit smoking to protect their lungs. Natural exposure to asbestos can also increase the risk of developing mesothelioma. People living in areas close to asbestos milling or manufacturing industries should be aware of the potential dangers. Vermiculite, a non-asbestos mineral silicate, was mined in Libby Montana. It was later found to be highly contaminated with asbestos. Many children played on the vermiculite slag that was found throughout the city. These children later developed mesothelioma. There are 28 sites across the USA that have found Libby mine vermiculite selected for general testing for asbestos. Another risk of developing mesothelioma is the use of products containing asbestos. Asbestos is still the largest source of consumer products, including many used today. Products such as electric blankets, heat guns, curling irons, molded clay, deep seedlings, slow cookers, frying pans, drywall, fireproof wood, dry wall, and plumbing can be dangerous. There are many other products that contain, or have been exposed to, asbestos. There are many asbestos-containing products banned by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Unfortunately, there are still products containing asbestos. It is a good idea to avoid using these products if possible, in order to reduce the risk of mesothelioma.
Malignant mesothelioma (me-zoe-thee-lee-O-muh) is a type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that closes most of your internal organs (mesothelium).
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is both aggressive and deadly. Treatment for mesothelioma is available, but for most people with mesothelioma, treatment is not possible.
Doctors classify mesothelioma into different types based on what part of the mesothelium is involved. Mesothelioma usually affects the tissues around the lungs (pleura). This type is called pleural mesothelioma. Some, more common types of mesothelioma affect the tissues of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), around the heart and testicles.
Other types of mesothelioma
The symptoms and signs of other types of mesothelioma are unclear, as these types of disease are very rare.
Pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the tissues around the heart, can cause symptoms and signs such as difficulty breathing and chest pain.
When to see a doctor?
Consult your physician if you have any signs or symptoms of anxiety. The signs and symptoms of mesothelioma are not specific to this disease and, due to the absence of mesothelioma, may be related to other conditions. If any persistent signs and symptoms appear to be abnormal or disturbing, ask your doctor to examine you. Tell your doctor if you have ever been exposed to asbestos.
