A nationally representative study of U.S. teenagers found that up to 99% of boys and 94% of girls play video games (NPD Group, 2011), and today, 91% of children between the ages of 2 and 17 play video games (Lenhart et al., 2008). In the US alone, computer games got more than $25 billion out of 2010,dramatically increasing Hollywood's 2010 film industry deals of $10.8 billion in the US and Canada (Movement Picture Relationship of America, 2011). The popular press frequently issues urgent warnings against the dangers of gaming addiction and their unavoidable connection to violence and aggression, particularly in children and adolescents, in the face of this almost universal play. In fact, the majority of psychological studies on the effects of "gaming" have focused on the negative effects: the dangers of aggression, addiction, and depression (for instance, Anderson et al., 2010; Ferguson, 2013; Lemola and other, 2011). This focus is likely to continue in the not-too-distant future, in part due to the huge amount of media attention given when mass killings (like the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School) are linked to young people who play violent video games (Ferguson, 2007). Most recently, in December 2012, President Obama requested $10 million from Congress to conduct research on the effects of violent media, particularly video games, following the revelation that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter played shooter games.
The effects of violent video games on the aggressive behavior of children and adolescents have been the subject of valuable research for decades, and this is certainly a significant body of work to take into consideration. However, we argue that in order to comprehend the impact of video games on the development of children and adolescents, a more balanced perspective is required, one that takes into account both the potential drawbacks and the advantages of playing these games. Taking into account these potential advantages is significant, to some degree, in light of the fact that the idea of these games has changed decisively somewhat recently, turning out to be progressively complicated, different, reasonable and social in nature (Ferguson and Olson, 2013). In the last five years, a relatively small but significant body of research has begun to demonstrate these advantages.
We propose that, taken as a whole, these findings suggest that video games offer engaging and immersive social, cognitive, and emotional experiences to young people. Additionally, these experiences may have the capacity to improve children's and adolescents' mental health and well-being.
We focus on four main areas to summarize the research on the advantages of playing video games in this article: Benefits in the areas of cognition (such as attention), motivation (such as resilience in the face of failure), emotion (such as mood management), and social (such as prosocial behavior) We propose some potential mechanisms by which playing video games fosters real-world benefits by integrating insights from developmental, positive, social, and media psychology. We hope to provide sufficient evidence and a theoretical justification to motivate new studies on the largely unexplored mental health benefits of gaming. We conclude with a plea to intervention and prevention researchers to investigate the potential benefits of video games and offer a number of promising directions in this direction.
