Total quality management (TQM) is the ongoing process of recognizing, decreasing, or eliminating manufacturing defects. It simplifies supply chain management, enhances the client experience, and guarantees that personnel are properly trained. The goal of total quality management is to hold all stakeholders engaged in the manufacturing process accountable for the entire quality of the finished product or service.

Total quality management is a systematic way to managing an organization as a whole. The process's goal is to continuously improve internal practices in order to increase the quality of an organization's outputs, including goods and services. The standards established as part of the TQM process might reflect both corporate priorities and any existing industry standards.
Industry standards can be established at several levels, including compliance with numerous laws and regulations governing the operation of a certain business. Industry standards can also involve the manufacturing of things to an accepted standard, even if the standard is not supported by formal rules. Acceptance sampling could be used to assess progress toward the TQM goal.
Total Quality Management Case Study
Toyota's deployment of the kanban system is perhaps the most well-known example of TQM. A kanban is a physical signal that sets off a chain reaction that leads to a certain action. Toyota used this concept to develop its just-in-time (JIT) inventory system.1
To improve the efficiency of its assembly line, the company opted to maintain only enough inventory on hand to complete client orders as they came in. As a result, each component of Toyota's production line is given a physical card with an associated inventory number.
Right before a part is put in a car, the card is withdrawn and moved up the supply chain, effectively requesting another of the identical part. This enables the organization to maintain a lean inventory and avoid overstocking superfluous assets. Effective quality management resulted in better autos that could be manufactured at a lower cost.
Total Quality Management History
TQM is frequently traced back to the early 1900s, when Walter A. Shewhart pioneered modern quality control. In 1931, Shewhart published a seminal industrial book titled Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product. This presentation is regarded as one of the founding and fundamental ideas of manufacturing quality control.
Shewhart's work continued to evolve, introducing new quality management standards decades later. What Is Total Quality Control? was written by Joseph M. Juran. In 1954, The Japanese Way was published. Juran's experience of being welcomed to Japan by Japanese scientists and engineers inspired the work. Juran later co-wrote Quality Planning and Analysis, another TQM best-seller.
W. Edwards Deming is another important character in TQM history. Deming became active with the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) after being assigned in Japan following WWII. Several TQM frameworks (Deming's 14 Points, Deming's Seven Deadly Diseases of Management, and The Deming Wheel) were developed during his career.
