India is the land of cultural diversity which has always been a center of attraction for travelers worldwide. Many of them visited here to pursue historical heritage; some came here to see its scenic beauty and learn its various cultures or languages. Different people have different purposes of visiting. But do you want to visit India to have some real-life spooky experiences?
Now, if you are lucky enough, you don’t need to wait for the dark; you can also have some spooky experience in the daytime. Here are some stories of these haunted places, which are not only based on local tales but also prohibited by the Indian Govt for all the visitors after sunset. No travel lover can avoid visiting these places because of their historical heritage values, but definitely should avoid them after the sunset.
1. Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan:
Chittor is always renowned for the sacrifice and bravery of queen Padmini. She used to be very popular because of her beauty and intelligence. Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khilji was enamored by her beauty of which he only heard and attacked Chittor in 1303 AD to defeat and make her surrender. She preferred death to dishonor and committed Jauhar – the act of self-immolation by leaping into a large fire. Not only her 700 women followed her and committed Jauhar to protect their pride and self-respect.
Since then, many incidents have been witnessed where people heard screams of women asking for help. It is said by locals that to date, Jauhar takes place by all the women. If you are lucky enough, you can have a glimpse of a market that also takes place inside the palace in the middle of the night. It is reported that a group of friends stayed back at the palace all over the night to observe paranormal activities. While exploring, they hear a voice asking for help; they were frightened and shocked when they turned around and saw a woman standing there wearing royal attire with a burnt face.
2. Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan:
This fort is situated in the Alwar district of Rajasthan and is considered the most haunted place in India that can shiver down your spine. The story began in the 17th century when a black magician (“Tantrik”) fell in love with the Princess of Bhangarh Ratnavati; she was believed to be wonderful. He tried to win her over and over, and she kept refusing him. One day, to make her fall in love, he tried a bewitch of cosmetics which she was supposed to use, but the princess found it suspicious and poured the entire bottle on a boulder that crushed the “Tantrik” to death. Before his last breath, he placed a curse on the entire landscape that no human would be able to live here peacefully.
It is said, after the last ray of sunlight bids, the entire landscape becomes a chilled haunted space. Several boards were put up there at several spots by the Archaeological Survey of India. It is mentioned to the visitors not to venture within its premises in the dark hours. It is said that during night air gets charged with uneasy heaviness, spirits roam inside, strange voices could be heard, and the fort becomes a hotbed of paranormal activities.
Locals who have attempted to stay back in the fort never returned. But while returning, three of them met with an accident and were dead. Once three friends decided to stay there, and while walking, one of them fell into a big well despite having a torch. However, he was rescued in the morning and hospitalized.
Even locals also leave the premises before sunset. You could find a lot of roofless buildings there in the nearby area of the fort. Surprisingly the walls above window level have vanished from all buildings of the town. The fort's caretaker also leaves the area and goes back to his village every day before sunset. Many corners of the space are spooky, which you can even feel in the daytime.
3. Shaniwar Wada Fort in Pune:
This fort was built by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in 1730. After his demise, his son Nana Saheb took the Maratha Empire in his hand. He died in a battle, and two of his sons also lost their lives afterward. The youngest son Narayan Rao was made the Peshwa, but he was only 16 years old and too young to look after the whole empire single-handedly, so he was assisted by his wicked-minded uncle Raghunath Rao. Soon Raghunath Rao and his wife Anandi Bai made a plan to capture and slay Narayan Rao with the help of a tribe of hunters named Gardi.
They wake him up from his sleep after entering his room, he ran towards his uncle’s chamber and asked for help. But they caught the young Peshwa, cut him brutally into pieces, and threw his body into the nearby river.
Since then, on every full moon night, his heart-wrenching cries can be heard. Hee still runs to ask for help, and all local people can listen to his cry till the date where he is still screaming “Kaka Mala Vachwa” (Uncle save me).
Apart from this incident, Shaniwar Wada Fort held a lot of painful histories and deaths. So, visiting Wada in no moonlight also is a matter of challenge. Though it is suggested not to enter the fort area after 6:30 pm, if you want to get some lifetime ghostbusting experience, you must visit this fort once after sunset.
4. Bhool Bhulaiya in Lucknow:
In Lucknow, among all haunted places, Bhool Bhulaiya or Bara Imambara is the popular one. In 1784, Asaf-Ud-Daula was built to give employment to the people. Britishers used their underground to keep Indian people as captives. Due to major famine, many people including women and children have lost their lives in it.
If you want to explore its mazes without a guide, you can get lost inside the mazes, and it is next to impossible to find a way out. Many people who have entered the mazes all alone haven’t ever returned.
Women and children who have died inside the building could be seen hanging around inside the premises of the building. Many visitors were able to capture some mysterious pictures of it, like hanging around inside from the huge building.
So, no doubt if you are lucky and welcomed by the ghosts, you can have all these spooky experiences in the daytime too. Or your heart is devil dared to spend the night without a guide?
5. Sikandar Bagh in Lucknow:
This place has witnessed the brutal death of 2300 Indian freedom fighters and 72 British. After their death, British Govt. didn’t even allow their family members to enter the burial ceremony. The dead bodies were eaten up by vultures and decomposed by the earth.
Locals say their mysterious images could be seen, and those disappear in the air. Sometimes their body parts also could be visible for a moment. Also, creepy noises can be heard.
6. Avadh Palace in Gujrat:
Avadh Palace is located at Rajkot and owned by a person who lives out of the country, no one actually knows where he is today. This palace used to be a hotel 30-40 years ago. But after an incident, it was completely sealed by the Govt. A young lady was gang-raped, murdered, and burnt alive by a group of men. Though there’s no official record, nature never forgets to keep it. It is believed to be the scariest place of Gujrat.
People have heard weird noises, screaming of a woman from the building. It is said that the place is scary at night,t but people also dare to come here in the daytime. It is strictly suggested not to explore the building at night even with a group of people.
7. Lothal in Gujarat:
This civilization was established 1000 years ago. It is popular for its antique waterways and ancient statues. Its spooky atmosphere is also a reason to make it popular.
Many visitors say they have been watched throughout their trip by the invisible. Whenever you enter the area, you’ll feel a cold spooky vibe.
8. Morgan House in West Bengal:
This house was built in the British era, located at Kalimpong. Mr. Morgan and his wife have started living in this house after their marriage, and only for some time could they stay together here. It is said that after Mrs. Morgan’s unnatural death, Mr. Morgan also left the house and never came back. Now the Govt uses it as a tourist lodge.
Local says Mrs. Morgan was used to torture by her husband and might be that was the reason behind her death, though the reason of her death is still a mystery. After a century, even if people are trying to forget her story, she always makes them aware of her presence by the sound of her heels while stepping up from stairs, making the sudden sounds of windows, doors and sometimes showing her shadowing image.
She doesn’t harm anyone, so you can stay some nights in her house to enjoy the beautiful view of Kanchenjunga and her presence.
9. Hasting House in West Bengal:
Hasting house is located in Kolkata and was built by Governor-General Warren Hastings. Today it is a women’s college. Many students claim that they have seen a person like Warren Hastings. The sound of a football, giggle of a young boy could also be heard here at midnight.
The good news is there are no restrictions if you want to stay at night here to explore ghosts.
10. National Library in West Bengal:
The National Library was built in 1836, located in Kolkata. It has a huge and rare collection of books, so book lovers love to spend their time here despite knowing and experiencing incidents of paranormal activities.
It is said the spirit of the wife of Lord Metcalf is still roaming inside the building and makes sure that her presence could be noticed. Many have heard her giggling, whispering, and howling. If you don’t return the book from where you have taken it, you can feel the heavy breathing of her down your neck. Want to try!
