A smile can last a lifetime — if you take care of it. For that reason, parents need to teach their children good oral health habits.

Carmona's "National Oral Health Promotion Call," children lose more than 51 million school hours, and adults lose more than 164 million working hours each year due to dental or dental visits. Recently, during the celebration of National Dental Health Month, Colgate and Drs. Carmona presented "Seven Steps for U.S. Surgeons in the Smile Smile," tips developed, with a grant from Colgate-Palmolive, to help keep teeth and gums strong and healthy:
1. Brush your teeth and gums with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, especially after breakfast and before bed.
2. Visit the dentist regularly.
3. Floss your teeth daily.
4. Use a fluoride brush to get strong, healthy teeth and gums.
5. Limit the number of times you eat snacks each day — and remember to practice healthy eating and get plenty of calcium.
6. Wear mouth protection when playing sports.
7. Ask your dentist about dental sealants.

Out Of the 444 students, 256 (57.7 percent) were male, while 188 (42.3 percent) were female. A total of 254 participants (57.2 percent) were premature medical students, and 190 (42.8 percent) were medical students in a medical year. Most medical students (177; 39.9 percent) used intermediate toothbrushes and fixed toothbrushes (137; 30.9 percent). An estimated 18 medical students (4.1 percent) did not know what brushes they were using. Most medical students (248; 55.9 percent) brush twice a day, while 163 (36.7 percent) brush once daily. Approximately 212 (47.7 percent) medical students used mouthwash and toothbrushes, while only 36 (8.1 percent) used floss and toothbrush. When asked which ingredient participants preferred to use in toothpaste, 262 (59.1 percent), 99 (22.3 percent), and 83 participants (18.7 percent) chose fluoride, salt, and mint. , respectively. The majority of participants (241; 54.3 percent) had met the dental hygiene guidelines. About 157 participants (35.4 percent) change their toothbrushes every two months, and 132 (26.7 percent) change their toothbrushes once every three months. The mean duration of the participants' teeth was 134.99 ± 69.01 seconds.
The majority of medical students (339; 76.4 percent) only go to the dentist when needed. About 114 (25.7%) said their teeth were sensitive to heat/cold and 42 (9.5 percent) said they were still sharp. An estimated 78 medical students (17.6 percent) had bright teeth, and an estimated 69 (15.5 percent) said they had teeth. About 96 participants (21.6 percent) smoked cigarettes, and 75 (16.9 percent) smoked "hot" regularly. Only six participants (1.4 percent) ate "API" (a combination of betel leaf and areca nut and tobacco) regularly. About 85 participants (19.1 percent) brush after eating sweets. The mean number of soft drinks consumed by the participants over the weeks was 5.51 ± 4.48.
Only 21 (4.7 percent) held the toothbrush at 45 degrees while brushing their teeth. Approximately 138 (31.1 percent) make circular movements of the toothbrush, while 128 (28.8 percent) make circular movements on the outside, and only 47 (10.6 percent) move the brush on the ground after each circular motion. Only nine participants (2.0 percent) experienced all four steps successfully. The majority of participants, 286 (64.4 percent), did not get one step right.
Independent t-tests were performed to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference (p <0.05) between sexes, the rate of tooth decay demonstrations, and the mean number of soft drinks consumed during the week. Female participants were found to have significantly higher points in tooth decay demonstrations than male participants (p = 0.001). On the other hand, male participants were found to eat more soft drinks per week than female participants.
