What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a type of mental condition in which an individual finds difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. In short, Insomnia is a mental sleep disorder.

Insomnia patients don’t feel fresh after waking up, or they could not sleep at night; these lead to fatigue, anxiety, anger, depression, and other symptoms.

Insomnia is not a rare disorder; it is the most common sleep disorder, according to the report of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

The report says that about 1/3 population is suffering from insomnia.

Causes of insomnia depend upon the type of experiences faced by an individual.

  • Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood
  • Maintenance Insomnia
  • Chronic Insomnia

 

It Can be Caused by a Large Number of Things:-

  • An Upset or Traumatic Event
  • Stress
  • Changing in Sleeping Habit or Changing in Your Sleep Place
  • Physical or Mental Illness
  • Some Types of Steroids Use in Medicines

 

Symptoms of Insomnia

How much a person sleep depends upon age or physical level. But a normal criterion for sleeping is seven to eight hours a day.

Sometimes most adults experience acute insomnia for the lasts days or weeks. Mostly it happens due to stress or ungodly event.

Symptoms of Insomnia are as Follows:-

  • Facing Difficulty in Falling Asleep
  • Waking Up Too Early
  • Waking Up During the Night Without Any Reason
  • Feeling Weak and Tired All the Day
  • Daytime Sleepiness
  • Anger, Irritability, Stress, Depression, or Anxiety
  • Facing Difficulty in Paying Heed
  • Number of Errors or Accidents Increases
  • Regular Worrying About Sleep

 

 

Test of Insomnia

There is no specific test to detect insomnia. Your doctor or healthcare assistant takes a physical exam and asks some questions about your daily routine. By checking the symptoms and noticing the sleeping history, you can check whether you have insomnia.

 

 

Treatment of Insomnia

By changing your sleeping habit, controlling your stress, taking a healthy and good diet, avoiding fast food, doing meditation, and performing regular exercise, you can treat insomnia very easily, but if it doesn’t work, you can go to a doctor and ask for treatment your doctor provides you some therapies like:-

  • Cognitive-behavioral Therapy
  • Stimulus Control Therapy
  • Light Therapy
  • Relaxation Techniques Therapy
  • Remaining Passively Awake Therapy
  • Sleep Restriction Therapy

 

 

They can prescribe some sleeping medicines that will help you to fall asleep. Generally, doctors don’t recommend sleeping pills, but in some cases, they have to give that pills like:-

  • Eszopiclone
  • Zaleplon
  • Zolpidem
  • Ramelteon

Effects of Insomnia on Children

Most children face a very harmful effect of insomnia due to the pressure of studies/projects and expectations of the family; they are overscheduled and stressed from schoolwork and social obligations.

Effects of Insomnia on Children are As Follows:-

  • Tiredness, Sleepiness in the Daytime, and Fatigue
  • Reduction in Attention, Concentration, or Weak Memory
  • Facing Problems With Social, Occupational, Family, or Academic Performance
  • Mood Swings Like Anger, Hyperactivity, Aggression
  • Weaker Motivation
  • Poor in Making the Right Decision
  • Short-tempered
