How Special Parenting Can Cause Psychological Trauma

For the past few years, I have been lulled into the fact that since I have gone through and dealt with the process of special parenting, I would no longer be overwhelmed by small or large backpacks at all. I have been wrong in this regard. Old traumatic experiences easily rise out of hiding whenever difficulties arise.

I have been talking for years that becoming a special parent is a crisis that requires a long process to deal with. At the same time as the special parent has to deal with the developmental task of growing up as a parent, he or she also has to go through the special stages of special parenting, which are very similar to the grief process.

As I went through my own process, I felt not only more balanced and you with the special characteristics of my child, but also more mature as a parent overall. However, I could not have imagined that the difficulties at the beginning of the crisis had caused such great trauma that even years later they would bring heavy emotions to the surface when even similar difficulties would arise.

It is no wonder now that sending your own child into child protection is a traumatic experience. The experience of not being able to cope with your own child anymore is a complete horror. Maybe you never fully hope for it? That most difficult period lasted a couple of years, during which acute support from both child protection and psychiatric wards had to be sought many times before a sufficient balance could be found with support measures.

Since then, several years of relatively serene time have been spent. But every now and then, the child’s workload rises above the crabs, and the fear of regressing back to difficult years becomes stronger. I have recognized that it causes me an experience of bottomless fatigue. When A gets to a scene where he badly loses control of his anger, it’s such a difficult experience for me that I can’t deal with it directly. So it erupts as a couple of weeks of heavy fatigue.

Fortunately, all the backpacks have so far been only momentary, and by regulating the load level, we have survived them without a negative twist. I don’t think I can go through the same phase again as I did years ago. Or miss it again if you have to. That's how it went even then. But yes, it left its mark.

Therefore, it is important to recognize that difficult experiences with special parenting can be traumatic. And all the more so, decent early support would be needed for parents to cope. The deeper the trauma a crisis causes, the longer it will affect mental health.
