High Jump
An athlete tries to jump to cover the maximum horizontal distance in the long jump, whereas in a high jump. He tries to jump to cover maximum height vertically. High jump is an athletic activity in which an athlete runs hard to gain a decent speed and jumps vertically to align his body over the crossbar kept at a high The athlete needs to have tremendous stamina, strong legs, and flexibility to gaining athleticism. The running track for the approach run can be made of a normal hard surface of about 20m. At the time of take-off, the at should come near the crossbar and attempt a high jump. Following are the basic stages for a high jump:
Stages/Skills of High Jump
a) Approach Run
An athlete needs to run to gain speed and transfer the force in his legs for jumping higher. A 20-meter-long semi-circular track is arranged for an approach run. At the checkmark, the athlete takes about 3-4 steps before the take-off. The entire run, along with the steps taken before the take-off, is called the approach run.
b) Take-off
After the approach run, the athlete leaves the ground with force to vertically align his body to cross the bar at the top. The athlete needs to balance his body and takes off at an angle of 45° to gain the force. Force is generated when both the legs and the knees coordinate together and press hard against the ground for attaining more height. While taking off, the athlete's one leg is grounded while the other is in the air.
c) Flight
This is the third stage of the high jump, which follows after a successful take-off. The time extended from taking off till the athlete clears the crossbar and lands on the ground is known as 'flight. Again, there should be proper coordination between the hand, legs, and trunk for obtaining a good flight for attaining maximum height.
d) Clearance
The crossbar is kept horizontally at a height lodged against the vertical poles. The attempt should be made by the athlete to cross the crossbar without touching or moving it. This stage follows after a successful flight. At the time of clearance, the athlete tries to bend his body around the bar, for which he needs to have a flexible knee and backbone.
e) Landing
This is the final stage of the high jump. The skill of landing on the ground without any difficulty and injury is landing. After the athlete crosses the crossbar and falls from a great height, he has to maintain the balance of his body and keep his body in such a position that he lands on the sand, friable mud, or soft surface safely. An athlete is supposed to be good if he completes all five stages conveniently.
As we briefly read about the stages/skills of the high jump. A good athlete is supposed to follow the explained rules or stages/skills of a high jump to perform a smooth and better high jump. These stages shall be followed chronologically to perform a smooth and better high jump.
