Engineering Studies in Malayalam: Things are not so easy

 BTech has more than 20 branches. Thousands of engineering books need to be translated into Malayalam in 8 semesters.

It is not yet clear whether students studying in English and Malayalam will have to take separate classes. If they want to take classes in both mediums, they will have the basic facilities and teachers in the engineering colleges. Question papers will have to be prepared in English and Malayalam during the university examinations.

As the regulatory body for engineering education, AICTE is solely responsible for authorizing the study of local languages. If it is to be implemented, the state should take the initiative. As the university conducts the course and issues the certificate, it is their responsibility to ensure the quality. If such courses are to be conducted, the rules of the university should be amended.

 

 

 Although the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has permitted studying the BTech course in Malayalam, many hurdles have to be overcome to implement it.

All higher education institutions, including the University of Technology, have been notified by IICTE that engineering can be studied in 11 local languages, including Malayalam.

As the university conducts the course and issues the certificate, it is their responsibility to ensure the quality. If such courses are to be conducted, the rules of the university should be amended.

The decision can be taken in Kerala only after the Board of Studies, the Academic Council, the Syndicate, and the Board of Governors of the Technical University decide on the matter. It is not possible to start studying engineering in Malayalam in a hurry.

The Higher Education Council is currently overseeing the higher education sector in the state. The Council has not yet entered into discussions on this matter. The experience of the universities conducting it should also be examined.

 

 

According to an official study conducted by the Finance Commission, more than half of engineering graduates in India are unfit for employment.
