Calm, Clear and kind: What Students want from their Teachers


This paper aims at identifying what students expect from their teachers.

Teaching profession has never been as demanding as it is in the recent past. Teachers have been constantly concerned with not only the academic development of their students but also the students’ social and emotional development.

The pandemic, climate crises, and global conflicts have added so much more for teachers to bear for their students, and at the same time, teachers also struggle to deal with all the things that are happening. Still, while many teachers are struggling to make ends meet in these uncertain times, one can often hear them complaining that they do not contribute enough to their students.

Get encouragement and inspiration– It is always encouraging for a student to be motivated by his or her teachers. For them, the validation of their mentors is very crucial. This will make them develop a positive attitude towards the lesson. In a class there are many students and it is not possible that all the students will be good in their studies.

What other teachers can learn from my experience is to always be patient with your students and always maintain a positive attitude. Communicate with your students and follow up with them. Ensure the students are at ease, allow them some time. It is very important to always be positive and have good energy around your students. A teacher is a very important person in a student’s life as he or she helps to shape the character, build knowledge and skills, and foster curiosity and imagination. Teachers help learners achieve their academic potential and develop positive interpersonal relationships.

To enhance students’ performance, teachers should expect the best from their students, encourage them and give them feedback and ensure that the classroom environment is conducive to learning. Also, teachers can know the areas that the students are having difficulties in and then recommend the necessary materials and resources to enable the students to overcome the challenges. Teachers should focus on the relationship with students, the evaluation of their knowledge, and the selection of content and teaching methods according to the students’ requirements. Also, they should make sure that the material they teach is interesting and related to students’ lives.

Effective teachers are enthusiastic about the content they are teaching, have good time for their students, are sure in their skills to teach, know how to control their classroom, and have a desire to help their students achieve their goals. Effective teachers are enthusiastic about their content, tolerant with students, self-assured in their capacity to educate, and capable of controlling their classroom, and have a strong desire to assist their students achieve their objectives.
