Fossils are the preserved remains, impressions, or traces of ancient plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. They provide valuable evidence about Earth's history and the evolution of life. Fossils are commonly found in sedimentary rocks and may include bones, shells, leaves, or footprints. They form when organisms are buried under layers of sediment, which harden over time and preserve their remains. Fossils can be preserved through petrification, compression, moulds and casts, or preserved remains in ice and amber. By studying fossils, scientists learn about extinct species, ancient environments, and the development of life on Earth.
