Tiruchirappalli, often known as Tiruchi or Trichy, is a large tier II city in Tamil Nadu, India, and the administrative center of the Tiruchirappalli district. The city is known for being the most livable and cleanest in Tamil Nadu and the sixth safest city in India for women. It is both the state's fourth-largest city and its fourth-largest metropolitan agglomeration. Tiruchirappalli is 322 kilometers (200 miles) south of Chennai and 374 kilometers (232 miles) north of Kanyakumari, virtually in the state's geographic center. The Cauvery Delta begins 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) west of Tiruchirappalli, where the Kaveri river divides into two, forming the island of Srirangam, which is currently part of the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation. The city has a population of 916,857 people and covers an area of 167.23 square kilometers (64.57 square miles).
