Since the beginning of time, medicinal plants have been employed in medicine. Globally, research has been done to confirm their efficacy, and some of the results have sparked the development of plant-based medications. More than $100 billion is spent annually on the global market for medical plant products. With a focus on the current strategic approaches to disease prevention, this article analyses the role, contributions, and utility of medicinal plants in treating important illnesses for public health. The "whole population" and "high-risk" techniques are contrasted. The value of the common-factor approach as a strategy for enlisting other health advocates in spreading the ideas of medicinal plants is stressed.
