What is a Zero shadow day?

Are there any shadows following you? This year's August 18 will see a unique astronomical event known as Zero Shadow Day, which will cause your shadows to almost completely vanish. This Friday's celestial event won't be witnessed by every city or person on the planet, but Bengaluru, India, will—and twice, no less.

Zero Shadow Day: What Is It?

Zero Shadow Day is a rare celestial phenomenon that astrophiles find remarkable when there are no shadows because of the tilt of the Earth and its orbit around the Sun. During this time, shadows would either cast vertical shadows or practically disappear.

When Will It Take Place?

To experience this astronomical phenomenon on August 18, be outside in the Sun during the afternoon. It is said that 12.17 pm is the precise time to see it and see it.

 

A Look Back in Time

The city will observe the phase for a brief time, not for the first time. Zero Shadow Day was observed in Bengaluru earlier in April of this year.

 

The unusual occurrence known as Zero Shadow Day, according to the Astronomical Society of India, takes place in areas close to the equator, namely between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer.

Twice a year, all vertical objects appear to stop casting shadows on the ground, a fascinating celestial phenomenon. The following Zero Shadow Day is scheduled for August 18, 2023.

You could note that on this day, despite the sun shining brightly, tall objects like buildings, trees, and poles do not cast shadows on the ground. Because the light is exactly overhead of our heads, the shadows vanish.

We have all learned in school that the reason we have seasons is because the Earth's rotation axis is inclined at a 23.5- degree angle to the plane of its revolution around the Sun. According to the information, this also means that, during the height of the day, the Sun will move in a year from 23.5 degrees south of the celestial equator to 23.5 degrees north of the equator and back again.

It continues, of course, the northern and southernmost points are the two solstices, and the Sun's passage across the equator is the two equinoxes.

In the month of June, Kolkata, West Bengal, witnessed Zero Shadow Day. On a day with zero shadows, the sun will be directly overhead at solar noon and will not cast a shadow on any objects.

This phenomenon only occurs along the latitude line connecting the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, according to Dr. Shashibhushan Pandey, Senior Astronomer at the ARIES. At the Tropic of Cancer, at 23.5 latitude, the shadow always reaches zero on June 21 and 22.

On December 21 and 22, a similar situation arises in the Southern Hemisphere. After that, the location of the zero shadow, which is 23.5 latitude from the equator, keeps shifting depending on the time and location, and this phenomenon occurs every year in that area. On Friday, August 18, there will be no shadow days in many parts of India. On a day with zero shadows, the sun will be directly overhead at solar noon and will not cast a shadow on any objects.

Two times a year, in May and July or August, regions between the tropics of cancer and Capricorn enjoy Zero Shadow Day. Although this phenomenon only lasts for a fraction of a second, the impact can be felt for up to a minute and a half.
