Yoga and Benefits Yoga is generally defined as a Hindu discipline that helps to unite the body and mind. It aims to achieve a state of perfect spiritual insight and peace, and is practiced most often in the West as a physical exercise practiced as part of a discipline.
The benefit of practicing yoga is nothing new. For many years it has been recognized as the perfect discipline to help achieve peace, better health and a longer life.
Many people see the benefit of yoga as some strange discipline that involves yogis contorted in unnatural positions, performing strange bodily actions, and living on top of a mountain somewhere in India. I personally remember a TV documentary many years ago that featured a yogi who had his tongue cut open and was using it to clean his sinuses! Anyone interested in yoga has probably also seen pictures of yogis supporting a lot of weight with their genitalia.
In this modern age, much has been learned about the benefits of yoga. Practitioners of yoga achieve greater mobility, longer life and inner happiness through their practice of the art. Yoga as we know it today is focused on the unification of mind, body and spirit. The mysticism of the Hindu discipline is no longer a myth and is attainable by anyone willing to learn.
Yoga schools have a special place in yoga education because many of the best places are located in the birthplace of yoga: India. These schools offer some of the most comprehensive and intensive yoga training in the world. While you could attend school anywhere, learning in India could be compared to learning culinary skills in France or literature in London. Whether you are attending short-term courses for training or long-term courses to learn the art of teaching yoga, these institutions are places with many yoga education options to choose from. Here are a few you might find at your average yoga school.
Sopan
Sopan yoga is considered one of the easiest types of yoga to master. The course often lasts a week or less. For those new to yoga, even in India, this is the place to start. You will learn yoga movements as well as breathing techniques, chanting and meditation. All of this is the foundation of yoga and therefore will almost always be available at a high level yoga school. Mastering Sopan is like learning the basics of any sport or activity: it builds a foundation and a foundation upon which to build greater things.
Pravesh
In 25 to 35 days, most schools will help you learn Yoga Pravesh. For about an hour a day, you work on your limb movements and add neck, waist and hip movement for a more complete yoga foundation. As yoga schools develop, lectures or discussions will often be added during the lessons to give you a better insight into not only the physical side of yoga, but also the mental and spiritual side.
Certificate
If you wish to complete an actual yoga degree from a yoga school, it may take 3-5 months. Once you have built a proper foundation in these, you will be introduced to the idea of asanas, as well as more advanced methods of self-purification and mental focus. You will likely be involved in research and lectures in addition to practicing yoga, as earning a yoga degree is a complete union of mind, body and spirit. This connection will allow you to practice yoga at the highest level and possibly continue to learn as you truly learn to connect your mind, body and spirit.
In addition to the degrees and levels listed, you can work your way up to advanced teacher degrees at many yoga schools. Whether you are becoming a teacher or just want to learn the finer points of yoga as a practitioner, you will find that these schools offer you the best that yoga has to offer on every level of your being. Remember, as with any yoga class, always make sure you are comfortable with the school you are joining. Yoga is about confidence and balance, and with a plethora of high-level schools in India and around the world, you're sure to find what you need.
