To start 2020, Intro Health's global Digital Health team looked at existing healthcare ecosystems and emerging technologies to determine trends that we think will shape digital health in the coming decade. The next decade will bring significant changes to how healthcare systems are designed, driven by opportunities like digital health, increasing consumerism, and increasing fiscal constraints. Due to the rapid advancement of digitization, healthcare is also set to undergo significant changes over the coming years.
The first major impact of the 2030 breakthrough is to enable healthcare systems to provide really anticipatory, proactive care. Third, advances in digital health will enable us to provide hospital-level care in the home, via telemedicine. Instead of going to the doctor's office to make appointments and get tests, telehealth and diagnostics in the home are likely to optimize the healthcare system in order to become a more patient-centric, modernized industry, comparable to that seen in business.
As doctors and health systems get more practice integrating these remote, off-site modality practices into more traditional practice models, I think we are going to see a redefinition of how every patient's health care journey looks. AI will help lower wait times for patients, as well as increase efficiencies across hospitals and health systems. By 2030, AI will tap into multiple data sources to uncover patterns in diseases and assist with treatments and care.
While a growing body of electronic healthcare technology is improving patient-centered care, at its core, e-health technologies are enhancing electronic data management, storage, and capabilities, all the while providing information that is readily available to patients, physicians, and providers. Digital technologies have the potential to improve healthcare for patients, can empower physicians and providers to do better work, improve efficiency, and lower costs. Taken together, this is how digital transformation supports improved healthcare outcomes, improved patient and provider experiences, and lower costs of care.
Ultimately, this willingness to experiment and leverage data to inform services will result in better health outcomes both for patients (the customers) and providers. From frontline healthcare workers using data to enhance their services to healthcare administrators using data to deploy healthcare resources precisely; from clinics to individuals, to supplies --these examples of using data more complexly will become standard practice, rather than the innovations seen today. Some innovations will be powered by digital technologies and artificial intelligence, but most will involve using techniques of implementation science - the science-based study of the practice of implementing research findings, moving care out of hospitals, and merging the worlds of health and social care.
These solutions will augment existing services and expand personalized healthcare virtually, in places where few if any services currently exist. Genomics will benefit many populations, and although a lot of the advances are being made in the laboratory, the healthcare systems must be responsive as well. Connected care has already emerged as a reality, driven by years of tremendous stress on the world's health systems, which lack sufficient trained health professionals to take care of its fast-growing, aging populations, and breakthroughs in powerful technological enablers like data science and artificial intelligence (AI). Automation, robotics, and self-diagnosis are poised to soon play an integral role in caring for the elderly population, creating better experiences for patients and caregivers alike, according to an Aruba report released today, but the risks could increase in safety.
