Yahaha, a Helsinki and Shanghai-based immersive, user-generated, low-code gaming platform developed by a group of Chinese gaming veterans, made an impact in January when it announced a $50 million fundraising round ahead of its April alpha launch. With 100,000 creators and hundreds of thousands of players, it has now secured an additional $40 million to continue developing its product — especially, to add monetization capabilities and more social hooks — as well as to employ more talent and for business growth.
Yahaha is referring to this as a "Series A+" expansion to its prior round. We are requesting an updated value, but for reference, when it announced fundraising 11 months ago, I was told that the valuation was a "few hundred million dollars."million" (thus in the $300-500 million area). Both the amount raised and the value stand out against the backdrop of low fundraising, particularly for consumer firms.
Yahaha bills itself as a dual-headquartered corporation, yet the majority of its new investors are from China and Asia.
This venture is being led by Singapore's Temasek and Chinese internet behemoth Alibaba, with participation from another Chinese business, 37 Interactive Entertainment. Previously, 5Y Capital, HillHouse, Coatue, ZhenFund, Bertelsmann Asia Investments, BiliBili, and Xiaomi invested in the firm.as if headquartered in Shanghai
The term "metaverse" has received a lot of attention recently, thanks in part to one of the greatest consumer internet firms of our time, Facebook, renaming itself as "Meta" and going all-in on the notion.
A lot of it hasn't resulted in anything so far, with Meta itself scoring an own-goal in its own attempts.
However, most people feel that gaming is one of the few bright spots, with players eager to pay for and use technology and software to enhance the immersiveness of their experiences.
Yahaha is capitalising on this potential by combining it with a handful of other major trends.
User-generated content (UGC) has long been a popular feature.
The firm presently employs more than 150 people and has offices in Helsinki, Seoul, and Shanghai. LinkedIn, which shut down operations in China last year, claims that almost half of the company's registered users identify as Chinese.of gaming and entertainment in general, but it has recently taken on a more sophisticated, businesslike aspect: people who would have previously generated media for enjoyment have now become "creators" who see business prospects in generating content and connecting with audiences. Because not all of those creators — in fact, not many of them — are "technical," firms that are developing platforms to assist artists generate and spin up their business potential are gaining attention (and money).
This is where Yahaha comes in. The company's founders — Chris Zhu (CEO), Pengfei Zhang (COO), and Hao Min (CTO) — all worked together as developers at cross-platform game engine Unity — in fact, Yahaha has been described as a hybrid of Unity and Yahaha.to me as having been created in collaboration with Unity — and their low-code platform intends to conduct all of the hard lifting behind the scenes.
With a focus on creators and the companies they establish, additional features for the product will include more "monetization modules" and other commercial improvements, according to Zhu.
"We've experienced amazing growth in YAHAHA during the Early Alpha stage," Zhu said in a statement. "With over 100,000 artists joining up to generate content with us, we're building on a strong basis." "This round of investment is the next step we're taking with YAHAHA, allowing more creative experiences to be monetized." We are also continue to go ahead by investing in critical community areas and constructing new facilities.ties with businesses that share our beliefs, partnering with specialists in game development, 3D asset production, and more We're not simply ushering in the next generation of entertainment with YAHAHA; we're also assisting the future generation of creators by providing them with the tools and integrated virtual world platform they need to create outstanding content. There are several opportunities awaiting us in the virtual world, and we want to be at the forefront of them with YAHAHA. To do so, we must continue to invest in our staff and the community that has brought us to this point."
The major issue is whether those tinkering with the early version will stick with Yahaha.as commercialization begins, whether that monetization is effective, if games are enjoyable enough to keep players engaged, and, of course, whether the metaverse becomes a permanent fixture in the market, rather than a fleeting stage as gamers go to the next level.
