My friend and ministry colleague Mark Sellers, who was seated next to me, was hearing Dr. Waltke for the first time. Mark said, "When he closed his eyes, he was mentally reading the book, wasn't he?" as he was most pleased, especially by the way Dr. Waltke prepared to respond to the question. "With one important addition," I said, "he was mentally scrolling the Hebrew text in his mind's eye. ", I agreed. That's exactly what happened, in my opinion.
One of my favourite Bible exegetes is Dr. Waltke, and the first thing that strikes me about him is how much he loves the Lord. The second is his devotion to and appreciation for the biblical text. This man has incredible understanding of the Old Testament.
It is delightful to observe a man's wisdom and expertise. How much greater it would be to discover limitless understanding and knowledge in God. Each of God's qualities enhances the others, which is the beauty of His character. We've already talked about God's omnipotence—his limitless power—which allows Him to do whatever He wants. We also looked at God's goodness, which drives all of His deeds toward believers as well as His universal grace to both believers and unbelievers. We now resort to His boundless knowledge. Together, these qualities—goodness, God's wisdom, and power—provide us with a tremendous deal of consolation and inspiration.
If the Bible teaches us anything, it is that God is all-knowing.
13 "With Him are wisdom and power; to Him are knowledge and counsel" (Job 12:13).
28 Do you not realise? Do you not know? The LORD, the Everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, never becomes weary or exhausted. His comprehension is opaque (Isaiah 40:28).
33 Oh, the breadth and depth of God's riches in understanding and knowledge! How impenetrable His standards and incomprehensible His ways are! (Romans 11:33; moreover, consider Job 9:1-4, 36:5, and Isaiah 31:1-2.
God is supremely knowledgeable and all-knowing:
5 "Look, God is mighty, but He does not revile [anyone]; [He is] mighty in wisdom" (Job 36:5).
5 Great is our Lord, and abounding in power; boundless is His wisdom (Psalms 147:5).
Human intelligence is considerably inferior to that of God:
8 The LORD proclaims, "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My methods. 9 "For My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts, just as the heavens are higher than the earth" (Isaiah 55:8-9; see also Job 28:12-28; Jeremiah 51:15-17).
Only God is wise:
Now to Him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, in accordance with the revelation of the mystery that has long been kept hidden but is now manifested and by the Scriptures of the prophets, in accordance with the command of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, [leading] to obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory for all time. Amen (Romans 16:25-27; see also 1 Timothy 1:17; Jude 1:25). (Romans 16:25-27; see also 1 Timothy 1:17; Jude 1:25).
