Wade Wilson's Deadpool is one of the most recognizable characters in modern pop culture. His fourth-wall breaking humor, over-the-top violence, and general disregard for his - or anyone else's - safety have made him a favorite among fans. Yet Deadpool himself has always longed for a different look - one that his future self actually manages to acquire.
Deadpool is a mercenary antihero who is often unnecessarily violent and morally debased, yet hides a secret heart of gold and dreams of heroism. In fact - in Deadpool #SecretComic - it's revealed that Wade Wilson secretly dreams of being an armored hero like Iron Man. In the comic by Gerry Dougan and Scott polish, Deadpool and a sentient barcode named UPC-PO travel across time and space. In order to dislodge a magical gem out of his own digestive system, Wade becomes an astral projection with the help of the sorceress lea. The projection appears as Deadpool's most "ideal physical self," and through it fans are treated to a blonde, mustachioed Wade bearing a resemblance to Tony Stark and dressed in an armored robot suit. This could be played off as just for laughs, but then in Cable/Deadpool Annual #1, readers are introduced to "Future pool."
Future pool is a future version of Wade, who it's implied works for the Time Variance Authority. He arrives to rescue Cable and his past self on their journey though a broken time stream. This version of the antihero wears the armored costume Wade has long dreamed of. His red and black armor might actually be even cooler than Tony Stark's. The suit has gray plating around the knees, neck, and arms, and is adorned with a large amount of additional armaments. Yet, the biggest attraction is a giant cannon attached to Future-Wade's left arm that would make even War Machine jealous. The issue comes from David F. Walker, Paco Diaz, and a host of guest artists.
While even Deadpool's future death took place with the proviso that Marvel's timeline is always in flux, this is at least a possibility for Wade, and one that fulfills his love of armored costumes. It even calls back to his debut, given Deadpool was originally conceived based on the Avengers'weaponry. It's worth noting that with his healing factor, the 'future' Deadpool could be from far, far in the future, beyond the usual lifespan of a normal human. As Future pool is able to help take down a rogue TVA agent with access to all the time, it's implied that his armor is as good as it gets in terms of futuristic tech. Though he has lived life as a mercenary, a villain, and even a hero, it is endearing to know that Wade Wilson wishes he was more like the Iron Man. And if Cable/Deadpool Annual #1 is to be believed, then Deadpool can one day gets his wish and become a little more like his "ideal physical self."
