The Zone Diet works on the principle that 100,000 years ago, we were vegetarians, and our body was designed to meet the needs of meat-based diets. Madonna, Demi Moore, and Jennifer Aniston swear by the results of the Zone Diet, founded by Barry Sears, PhD. The Zone Diet contains 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat and is known as the 40-30-30 system. As the food industry develops, more and more carbohydrates have been added to our daily diet, thus causing our metabolism to burn fat. The reason for our excess weight can also be related to the high grains and starch in our diet (pasta, rice, bread, and potatoes). The Zone Diet approach requires us to return to the diet of our ancestors where meat, fruits, and vegetables are the staple foods. The Zone Diet suggests that you need the right amount of carbohydrates in proteins and fats to control insulin in your blood. Excess hormone (insulin) can increase fat retention and inflammation in the body (conditions associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease). Sears claims that by using the Zone Diet, you actually increase your fitness. By regulating blood sugar, you allow your body to burn more fat in the body. Although you are not restricted to any particular food group, it is best to avoid foods high in fat and carbohydrates such as cereals, starch, and pastas. Suitable sources of carbs for fruits and vegetables are also recommended monounsaturated olive oil, almonds, and avocados. The Zone Diet claims that it uses food as a health supplement for overall health, weight loss and prevention or treatment for heart disease and diabetes. Sears says you can check to see if you are 'hormonal right' with a diet by following the Zone diet and see how you feel after four hours. To simplify the Zone Diet, fill one-third of the plate with low-fat protein, and then two-thirds with fruit and vegetables. Celebrities and other health experts say that the Zone recommendations do not go far beyond the USDA's (United States Dietary Association) diet guidelines and are therefore the promoters of the Zone Diet. Some argue that the Zone Diet has erroneous proportions but Sears claims that the Zone diet is a low glycemic-load diet with high protein content. . A Zone Diet Criter like AHA (American Heart Association) classifies the Zone Diet as a high protein and does not recommend the Zone Diet for weight loss. They argue that the Zone Diet has not been proven to be effective in long-term weight loss. The AHA has issued an official warning warning about diets such as the Zone Diet. They believe that the Zone Diet is dangerous as it restricts the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals in certain foods. The AHA also states that the protein content in the Zone diet is very high even though a low fat content is good. Robert H. Ecker M.D of A.H.A. finds the Zone Diet theory of insulin to be wrong and claims that there is no scientific evidence that the hormone insulin plays a major role in weight control.
