Typical of Lagos events, drinks, laughter, finger food floating in the air and hungry wannabes aggressively latching on to every famous person in the name of networking, it was at the Landmark cinemas where the 10th edition of the Africa International Film Festival was holding. I and friends were chatting away about the Nigerian film industry when I was introduced to this film director whose wife’s film had just finished screening. He had just been asked to produce the second season of a web series he produced three years ago.
“They didn’t like it when I shot the first season” he said. The studio sat on the project for three years because they believed that the audience would not like the film because it deviated from the kind of content they had been putting out. Then three years later, when they finally uploaded the film, the audience loved it and they were ready for the Director to do a second season. “You did a good job Daniel” he was told.
Some ideas or projects take time to materialize, some of them are way ahead of their time such that the people who have the money or the means to support it and make it a reality don’t just see the potential.
Emily DeSanctis explains that “Gut instinct, or intuition, is your immediate understanding of something; there’s no need to think it over or get another opinion — you just know. Your intuition arises as a feeling within your body that only you experience. Because the feeling is so personal, no one else can weigh in to tell you if you’re in touch with your gut instinct or not. You alone have to make the call. Because of this, trusting your intuition is the ultimate act of trusting yourself.”
Being a creative or an innovator of any kind can be daunting and it means you need to learn to trust your instinct and keep at your dream till you can convince the people that matter or you can make it a reality.
I agree with Claudia Hammond in a BBC article when she said that “our gut instincts are not always as random as they seem.”
Trusting your instinct as a creator or innovator is essential to success, it is what sets you apart from every other person and makes you create the million dollar work or project.
From the moment an idea strikes, the decision to follow through or ignore largely depends on how much self-believe you have as an individual and whether or not you think you can do it.
A lot of people will simply not get it including the people who are closest to you, however, we all need to learn to sharpen our instinct and trust our guts even in the face of doubts and discouragement. How do you know to keep going or to keep working on an idea or to not give up on a project?
