Why You Need Boat Insurance

Some people simply ignore boat insurance. In fact when bad things often happen to boats they think nothing bad will happen!

If you have a boat, you will need boat insurance. In fact, many states now require boat owners to have watercraft liability insurance before they can own or operate a boat. If you are financing your boat, your lender will almost always require you to have full coverage boat insurance.

Again, most people do not expect anything bad to happen - but bad things do really happen!

Destruction is a problem you face. This is especially true if you dock your boat in the marina. Destruction can also occur if you park your boat at your home or hotel during your trip.

When you shop for insurance, make sure your policy covers coverage. Most issuers of boat insurance will only offer you a watercraft warranty - but in most cases, you will need more coverage than that! Stealing is another possibility. Cars are stolen all the time - but so are boats. In fact, stealing a boat is easier than stealing a car!

Boat insurance covers you in the event of destruction, theft, sinking, fire, storm, overturning, collision, collision and explosion. In addition, the insurance must cover the boat, motor and trailer used to transport the boat. As long as it is legally permissible to operate the boat, the boat must be covered, regardless of who is operating the boat.

Boat insurance usually applies to you even when it is not working. If anything happens to your motor, it should be covered by your insurance. It also covers you when you have to steer your boat back to shore.

You will be covered depending on the type of coverage you purchase through your insurance agent. For this reason, it is important to know what type of coverage is available. Not all insurance companies offer all types of coverage, but they do offer Watercraft Liability and Watercraft Medical Payments.

Watercraft 'liability applies to you in the same way that car liability insurance protects you in the event that you are found to have made a mistake. Medical payments cover medical expenses incurred by you and the people on your boat due to a boat accident on a covered water vessel.

Optional insurance usually includes coverage for proper repairs, emergency services for your boat, motor or boat trailer, and debris removal. Debris removal is a very important coverage. If you sink a boat, the insurance company must access the loss and take it before paying your claim. It is very expensive and in most states, the law requires you to remove damaged or sunken ships.

Boats can be a luxury item - but they are also a very expensive luxury item.

Repairing or replacing a boat is not something you can easily afford - but in most cases, you will find that boat insurance is very affordable. However, if you are thinking in terms of cost, and you feel that you can not afford the boat coverage, you can be sure that you will not be able to repair or replace the boat!

No matter how you look at it, you still need boat insurance, even if you only buy watercraft liability coverage. Again, most states now require this liability coverage for water vessels and if the boat is funded, alternative coverage may also be required.

Discuss your boat insurance coverage requirements with your insurance agent to determine which coverage is right for you and your boat.
