The World Health Organization has suspended the supply of Corona Vaccine (Covaxin) manufactured by India's vaccine maker Bharat Biotech to other countries through United Nations agencies. According to WHO, it has asked the company to upgrade facilitiesof the vaccine and correct some minor deficiencies found in the inspection.
Vaccine is effective, no safety concerns
According to a WHO statement, countries receiving the vaccine have also been asked to take appropriate action, but it did not specify what the appropriate action would be. Although the organization maintains that covaxin is fully effective and there are no safety concerns, the suspension of production for export would result in disruption of the supply of Covaxin.
The suspension follows the results of a WHO Post Emergency Use Listing (EUL) inspection from March 14 to 22, and the vaccine manufacturer has also indicated its commitment to suspend production of Covaxin for export.
Asked to remove the shortcomings of GMP
The WHO said the company has been asked to address the shortcomings of GMP and submit a corrective and preventive action plan to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and WHO. Explain that GMP refers to Good Manufacturing Practice Rules as directed by the US Food and Drug Administration under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
The company recently reduced production

However, on Friday, the covaxin maker said it was slowing production of the vaccine as demand fell along with a drop in infections and widespread vaccination coverage in the country. The Bharat biotech company says it will focus on pending facility maintenance, process and facility optimization activities in the times to come.
