Based on Charles Addams' fictional character Wednesday Addams, Wednesday is an American coming-of-age supernatural comedy horror television series that can be watched online. Jenna Ortega plays the title role in this Alfred Gough and Miles Millar production. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Fred Armisen, and Christina Ricci play supporting roles. Tim Burton, who also acts as executive producer, directed four of the eight episodes. Wednesday Addams is the main character, as she tries to solve a monster mystery at her school.
Before its cancellation, Burton worked on a stop-motion animated The Addams Family movie. He was said to be in charge of a television show in October 2020, and Netflix later ordered more episodes of it. The Latina heritage of the character was a factor in the casting of Ortega. Burton approached Ricci about taking on a supporting role in the series after she had previously portrayed the title heroine in the 1991 film and its 1993 follow-up. From September 2021 until March 2022, Romania served as the location for filming.
Wednesday had its premiere on November 16, 2022, and was made available on Netflix on November 23. Critics largely gave the film favorable reviews and applauded Ortega's performance. It rose to the second-most watched English-language Netflix series within three weeks of its debut. For Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress - Television Series Musical or Comedy for Ortega, it got two Golden Globe nominations.
After throwing live piranhas into the school pool to avenge her brother Pugsley's mistreatment by the boys' water polo team, Wednesday Addams is expelled from her school. As a result, her parents, Gomez enroll her at Nevermore Academy, a private school in the Vermont town of Jericho for hideous outcasts, where they both attended high school. Wednesday struggles to connect with her classmates and runs afoul of the school's principal due to her cold, emotionless personality and belligerent disposition. She does learn, though, that she inherited her mother's psychic prowess, which she uses to solve a local murder investigation.
Development:
Tim Burton was asked to helm the 1991 movie during pre-production, but he declined to owe to scheduling difficulties with Batman and Batman Returns, which led Barry Sonnenfeld to accept the position. Illumination Entertainment bought the underlying rights to the Addams Family illustrations, it was revealed in March 2010. Using the original illustrations by Charles Addams as inspiration, a stop-motion animated movie was originally intended. The movie was slated to have Burton co-write, co-produce, and potentially even direct. The movie was reportedly scrapped in July 2013, and according to Burton, this was because the studio preferred a computer-animated approach to the stop-motion method.

Wednesday was first revealed as an undisclosed Addams Family project directed by Burton in October 2020. Burton would serve as the series director, and MGM Television would handle production. Along with Gail Berman, Jon Glickman, and Andrew, Gough, and Burton would serve as showrunners and executive producers for the project. Netflix handed the production an eight-episode series order in February 2021. The series was being produced by 1.21, the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, Glickmania, and Kayla Alpert as of August 2021. Four of the eight episodes were directed by Burton, who was referred to as making his "first genuine excursion into television." The other two episodes were directed by Gandja Monteiro and James Marshall. Colleen Atwood, a frequent collaborator, as a costume designer, joined Burton.
Filming :
Filming In the Romanian village of Buşteni, in the Southern Carpathians, filming took place from September 2021 to March 2022. The fictional Nevermore Academy was filmed at Cantacuzino Castle, the Politehnica University of Bucharest, the Sinaia train station, the Bucharest Botanical Garden, the Montessori House, and the historic Olga Greceanu Mansion in Dâmbovița County, which served as the Gates mansion. CGI was added to exterior shots of Cantacuzino Castle. The entire town of Jericho and other locations were built at Buftea Studios. The original Charles Addams cartoons served as the main influence for production designer Mark Scruton's set design, which also drew inspiration from Tim Burton movies like Beetlejuice and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ortega called her work on the series "very stressful and confusing" and "the most overwhelming job I've ever had" due to the production's fast-tracked shooting schedule.

Danny Elfman, a longtime Burton collaborator, reportedly joined the project in December 2021 to write the original theme and co-compose the score with Chris Bacon.
A portion of the series' original score by Elfman and Bacon is included in the soundtrack, along with several popular songs performed on the cello, such as the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters," and Dua Lipa's "Physical." The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, the Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar, The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Sans No. 1 by Erik and "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Nikolai are among the classical compositions included in the score.
Release:
Wednesday's first teaser trailer debuted on August 17, 2022. A full trailer followed on October 9, and on November 8 the series' opening sequence was revealed. On November 16, 2022, the Hollywood Legion Theater in Los Angeles hosted the world premiere of Wednesday. On November 23, 2022, its eight episodes were made available on Netflix. In a promotional video posted to Twitter by Netflix in December 2022, Thing, a sentient disembodied hand that appears in the series, is seen wandering the streets of New York City and observing the emotions of onlookers.
