There is a certain temporary quality that separates gamers from all other people, something that makes us, us and them, not us. I’ve never been able to put my finger on it, but it’s inevitable there. Today, in hopes of getting closer to that important generosity quality, we explore part of what makes us comment. In particular, we look at what draws different types of players to a hobby game. Every player plays for a variety of reasons, but there are common threads that combine what works together. Many gamers are encouraged to challenge the game. Success in the game can be controlled by any variety of skills. A First Man Shooter needs moving reflexes, a strong hand, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. The puzzle may require a lot of vocabulary and the ability to rethink the use of old words, but there is no speed limit. Sports simulation may require in-depth knowledge of the topic, in addition to arcade skills, but it will probably not be a major concern for language skills. A typical series that every game challenges a particular player skill challenge. This challenge can be a powerful incentive.
The Challenge Motivated Player is drawn to a game that tests his skills, preferably the one who tests them to their limit. The player of the game may also be motivated by environmental improvements resulting from high performance. They are driven, not only to succeed, but also to thrive. Promoted Games Players thrive whenever a game pushes their selection skills, but they may not be interested in games that are too far away from their intended purpose. Competition is a close cousin of the challenge. Most players want to show that they are the best, compete with their teammates and come out on top. Competitive gamers range from those who want to challenge the right fight to the kind of kids who talk about the new winners calling them all, which gives us a bad name. Competition can be easy to take too far. There is nothing inherently wrong with the competition. To some extent, competition is simply a challenge to overcome.
It is only when it leads to teasing a teammate that he or she begins to lose interest and becomes an unfortunate personality trait. Competition Motivated players are successful in those games where they compete for a result that is determined by the ability to play the game. They will often dwindle to those areas that require cooperation, such as multiple MMORPGs, or to games where skill plays a very small role, such as in complex cards or dice games. Next week we will look at some common motivations for gamers, including Creativity and Escapism.
1. Video games can enhance handicrafts.
Controller-based games can be good at your hands. In a study involving a team of surgeons, researchers found that those who played video games were quicker to perform advanced procedures and made 37 percent fewer mistakes than those who did not. Special video games have also been used as physical therapy to help stroke victims control their hands and wrists.
2. Video games can elevate your brain.
Playing games is a real exercise of your transformed mind. Studies have shown that playing video games regularly can increase gray matter in the brain and improve brain communication. (Gray matter is associated with muscle control, memory, vision, and spatial movement.)
