May 1 is the International Day of Workers or International Labor Day dedicated to workers and laborers across the world. The day commemorating the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labor movement is observed in many countries on MAY 1. The day has its origins in the labor union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement. Popularly known as May Day, the day is observed in countries such as India, Cuba, and China among other countries. International Labor Day is a public holiday in many countries.

 In India, Labor Day is a national holiday. The first Labor Day in India was celebrated in Chennai in 1923 by the Hindustan Labor Kiran Party. Malappuram Singaravelu Chestier, a communist leader, advocated that May 1 be designated a national holiday to recognize workers' efforts.
