Foreigners who like their hamburgers, French fries, cold drinks and Thai should just have rice for every meal. But what could I choose after spending most of my life in Canada and moving to Chiang Mai, Thailand?
Like any other city there is an old fashioned restaurant that offers a variety of tastes and budgets. Chiang Mai is no different. Thai people love food. Restaurants are full of Thai and foreigners who enjoy all kinds of food. Instead of dealing with the good restaurants we all eat but not every day this article is about the daily diet of the Thai people here in Chiang Mai.
The most popular restaurants in North America are Harvey's, McDonalds, and Burger King. Here we have street vendors. The result is a fast-paced prepared food.
Street vendors may sell fresh fruits such as pineapples, mangoes, watermelons, strawberries (locally grown), and more. Each fruit is cut into small pieces and placed in a plastic bag and given a long wooden stick to eat. The cost is usually 10 baht which reaches about 25 cents in the U.S. and the fruit is kept cool and sweet. And the vendors here sell fast food and snacks. Get cooked rice, meat and vegetables and pack in a plastic bag but this time tightly wrapped with an elastic band for about 20 baht or 50 cents in the U.S. Take your rice meal, or a noodle meal or soup. Delicious and regular prepared and wrapped and still warm or if you want to wait a minute they will take you out of the pot and put you in a bag while you wait. So cooked food and delicious snacks amounting to 75 cents U.S. For many Thai in Chiang Mai this is a typical meal. They continue to drive home, unwrap the elastic, put the rice in a bowl, put a few cups of table and water bottle and that's some of their food.
We all love fast food and we all want it to be affordable. What we have in common. You will find differences between here and there are price, quality and service.
Price. The price of food whether it is in restaurants, or street vendors is cheaper than usual. The filling meal can be obtained for less than $ 1US with the food I described above which includes a bowl of rice, cooked food from a street vendor and fruit from a street vendor. For only $ 2.50 you can always eat a full course buffet, desserts, coffee, tip and taxes included as well as a parking attendant tip Low prices because ingredients are grown locally and for work. the cost is not expensive.
Quality. Food quality is much healthier here than at home. Back home KFC, McDonalds, and Harvey’s are popular lunch and dinner restaurants. If you think you are thinking of healthy eating then think again. Here you have no fat French fries, Hamburgers stuffed with ketchup, mustard, onions, mayo and more to hide the flavor of the meat you eat. Here you eat rice, fresh vegetables, fresh fish, and drink water and food in contrast to a frozen plastic bucket and a soft, sugary drink.
Service. A teenager earning a few extra dollars at a fast food restaurant or an adult making a living working full-time at a restaurant here. What would you expect them to do for you? Nothing more to say.
If you are coming to Chiang Mai do not go looking for restaurants with food you usually eat. You can also stay home and buy a video about Thailand, or watch a TV program about Thailand.
The food here is delicious, healthy, and inexpensive.
The basic ingredient in all rice foods. Yes rice for breakfast too. I have never had rice. Potatoes were my staple food. But here the potatoes are very expensive and although I agree to buy them and make potato soup with french fries it is different and it is not the law.
As I said before, Thai people are known for making anything fun.
So grab some fresh ingredients and mix them with rice and special sauces that are key to tasting and you have - Healthy, delicious, and inexpensive food.
Top if you have picked up locally grown pineapple, watermelon, mango, strawberry or twelve or more fruits and you have food that you will enjoy and be ready for.
The funny thing about food is that anything you like is NOT HELPFUL. What are your favorites? Cake, pies, French fried, burgers, ice-cream. Well they are not so good at eating regularly. What do you hate to eat? Broccoli, asparagus, spinach, brown rice, boiled chicken. These are good for you.
