The Canadian province of British Columbia committed to completely transitioning from diesel to electricity-powered school buses last month, making it the largest school jurisdiction in North America. Currently, more than 100,000 students are transported there by bus. The Canadian Electric School Bus Alliance, a new alliance of educators, healthcare providers, and environmental organizations, is lobbying for a national conversion to electric school buses as a method to stop at least one source of dangerous pollutants, diesel exhaust, from damaging the delicate bodies of children. By 2030, the Quebec government has pledged to have a fleet of school buses that is sixty-five percent electric. By doing this, Canadians are acknowledging a fundamental truth about climate pollution that is frequently ignored by the media but that applies to everyone, regardless of where you live on the United State Canadian border.
In addition to having long-term effects on the planet's ecological balance, greenhouse gas pollution frequently have an immediate negative influence on the health of those who are exposed to their fumes. Unlike most school buses and trucks, most cars in the US do not use diesel as their major fuel source. The COVID-19 pandemic boosted efforts to reduce diesel use on roads: A study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that exposure to air pollution, such as diesel exhaust, raised the risk of dying from the coronavirus by at least 8%. According to the American Lung Association's most recent State of the Air report, children and elderly persons are most susceptible to the impacts.
People in low-income communities of color who are more likely to reside close to the major transit centers highways, ports, and airports that are the primary source of the pollutants are those who are most exposed to it. The Lung Association analysis states that Black or Latino people make up fifty-four percent of the population who are exposed to the most hazardous combination of harmful air particles. According to the Lung Association, four out of five of the cities with the worst levels of particle air pollution, to which diesel is a key contributor, are in Texas. Visalia, Bakersfield, Calif Fresno-Madera-Hanford, and Los Angeles-Long the Beach are the top four cities in the Golden State, and Fairbanks, which is located in Alaska, is the fifth. The Environmental Protection Agency of the United States has yet to approve California's Air Resources Board's effort to phase out all diesel-powered vehicles and buses in the state by the year 2036. For supporters of diesel, who have long argued that it is a transitional fuel with fewer greenhouse gas effects than oil, April was, in fact, the cruelest month. The argument that diesel-powered vehicles generally get more miles per gallon while emitting greenhouse gases every mile has been refuted, and the pressure to banish diesel from schools and highways stems as much from worries about its effects on public health as it does from diesel's contribution to the planet's greenhouse gas load.
