The Wear OS software is upgraded in front of the later this year launch of additional capabilities.
Hopefully, Google's muddled approach to card management and wireless payments is beginning to clear up. Most lately, this has shown itself in a strong pushback against Google Wallet branding. Wallet replaced Pay on many customers' phones earlier this week, and today we learn that Wear OS is also undergoing the same shift.
Users of smartwatches will see the Wallet symbol in place of the G Pay icon. Functionally, there are no noticeable changes, and the app looks exactly the same as it always has—the G Pay logo is still visible at the top.
There was a lot of talk about feature parity between the Wear OS and smartphone editions of the app back at I/O 2022 when Google was setting out its grand plan for Wallet, but it did feel like the company was attempting to down our expectations at the time. Indeed, Google says in its statement today that any supplementary feature is still awaiting a later release — at least we have a little bit of a schedule, advised to look for advancement before the end of 2022. Along with further forms of digital content compatibility, Wallet for Wear OS should be made available to consumers in more nations.
Today Google also looks to be pushing its Wallet upgrades to a lot more Android phones all across the world, in addition to making Wallet available on Wear OS.
Google Wallet in India
Google particularly adores renaming its services when they change, especially around Google I/O, in an effort to attract new users and attract the attention of fresh eyes. Google's chat applications and payment services appear to rename and rearrange themselves even more regularly than Wear OS, which changes its moniker approximately every two years. Users were transferred from the outdated Google Pay app to the more modern GPay app, which is a renamed version of the mobile payment service Tez that is only available in India but be ready for another name change.
We Americans will have two Google apps for payments starting this summer while Google transitions the majority of the current Google Pay countries to a new Google Wallet app, which will support a much wider range of payment methods than just credit cards, and debit cards, and some shopping rewards programs. Support for immunization cards, digital IDs, event tickets, digital auto keys, and additional passes and transport cards will all be supported by the revamped service.
Google Wallet will be upgraded and take the place of Google Pay for Android and Wear OS in the 42 nations where Google Pay is the main Google payments app. However, both applications will be available in the US and Singapore, so if you want to use the new supported products, you'll need to download a second Google Wallet app. Additionally, Google Pay will continue to be the sole app that Indians see and use for digital wallets and payments; the country is not receiving a rebranding at all.
