THE MAIN REASON FOR THE INCIDENT
The violence in May allegedly followed fabricated reports that Kuki militiamen had badly assaulted a Meitei woman. The Print reports that as a result, "a new, deadly cycle of reprisal violence against Kuki tribal women allegedly by Meitei mobs" was set in motion.
Where did it begin?
When Kukis started protesting against Meitei ambitions for official tribal recognition, which they claimed would increase their already considerable power over government and society and allow them to purchase land or establish themselves in mostly Kuki districts, tensions reached a boiling point.
Who is at odds with who?
Long-running conflicts between Meitei, Kuki, and Naga groups over competing nationalist and religious interests have resulted in clashes with Indian security forces on both sides. However, the Meitei and the Kuki are the only two parties involved in the most recent conflict.
"This time, the conflict is strictly rooted in ethnicity, not religion," claims Dhiren A Sadokpam, editor of The Frontier Manipur.
The first information report (FIR) that the survivors submitted claims that at least one of the ladies, who was 21 years old, was the victim of gang rape. The second woman was 42, according to the police report.
The incident took place on May 4, a day following violent riots between the primarily Hindu Meitei and primarily Christian Kuki-Zo tribes in the isolated northeastern state of India, which is ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Kuki-Zo and Naga tribes reside in the neighboring hill districts, whereas the Meiteis, who make up more than half of Manipur's 3.5 million inhabitants, are primarily concentrated in the capital city of Imphal and the wealthy valley that surrounds it.
In addition to arresting a man, the police said they have opened a case of gang rape and will be holding additional suspects soon.
As a result of legislators' demands for a debate on the matter, the Delhi parliament's session was suspended on Thursday.
The act, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "shamed India" and "no guilty will be spared."
The gang rape of the ladies took place after the town was set on fire and two men—one middle-aged and one young—were killed by the crowd, according to the ITLF.
However, according to the police complaint made by a relative of one of the ladies, only one of the women was subjected to gang rape. It also stated that a third woman had been made to strip off, although the film does not show her.
According to the police, the event happened on May 4 and that a case of kidnapping, gang rape, and murder had been filed in the Thoubal district.
