Raleigh scattering, a phenomenon, is the reason the sky appears blue. This scattering is the result of particles of considerably smaller wavelengths dispersing electromagnetic energy, of which light is a form. While only about one-third of sunlight is scattered by atmosphere particles, the smaller wavelengths of light tend to disperse more easily. This phenomenon is known as diffuse sky radiation, and it is what reaches Earth through the atmosphere. We perceive the sky as blue because these shorter wavelengths correlate to blue hues.
