New Delhi: Mood swings are like a tsunami of emotions – sometimes you are happy, the other second that happiness fades into oblivion and a dark spell of doom begins. People around you would get baffled if you display such a drastic set of emotions, but science terms this as mood swings.
Mood swings are nothing but an extreme fluctuation of brain chemicals that control our behaviour. These chemicals change all through the day, according to our environment, sometimes make us sensitive, or display the attitude of couldn’t care.
Various factors aid mood fluctuations, taking a toll on our mental health. A few of them are:
1.The environment: Your mood depends on the environment you are in. From a high-pressure office meeting to a party, you will notice a complete transformation in your emotional state.
2.Hormones: There is a likely hormonal imbalance that causes frequent mood swings. In women, during PMS there are several mood swings like anger, increased irritability, and despair caused due to high and low levels of hormonal changes. Estrogen and progesterone together can disrupt brain chemicals that need to be able to communicate well for a sound state of mind.
3.Mental well-being: Your mental state of mind says a lot about the kind of temper you display. If you suffer from a lot of stress and anxiety, you will suffer from frequent mood swings.
4.Diet: A lot depends on the kind of food we eat and what time we consume it. People who are perpetually on a diet tend to be more irritable and grumpier than those who take a healthy, nutritious diet.
Effects of mood swings
Mood swings should not be taken lightly, for the long-term effects can be quite serious and dangerous if not detected and treated well in time. A few of the repercussions can be:
1.MMD or Major Depressive Disorder: MMD or depression affects millions across the world. People with depression experience phases of low mood throughout their lives. It affects their relationships, career, and everyday life.
2.Bipolar Disorder: This mental health problem has no cure but can be kept in control through therapies and medication. Bipolar disorder makes a person experience extreme highs and lows in a short period.
3.Borderline Personality Disorder: This can also cause extreme mood swings and self-image problems.
4.Schizophrenia: People suffering from schizophrenia suffer from extreme hallucinations and delusions that can impact their quality of life.
A mood swing is a sudden or intense change in emotional state. During a mood swing, a person may quickly switch from feeling happy and upbeat to feeling sad, irritable, or angry.
Often, lifestyle factors play a role in the onset of mood swings. People may have sudden changes in mood if they are:
experiencing a significant life change, such as moving home or changing job
feeling stressed or overwhelmed
not getting enough sleep
not eating healthily
taking medications that impact mood or sleep
Regular and severe mood changes, however, can indicate an underlying condition. Some conditions that lead to mood swings can affect both males and females, while some affect females only.
Bipolar disorder is a type of mental condition that people suffer from; there can be many reasons for its cause. Depression, stress and anxiety are also different types of mental health conditions and are different from bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a condition wherein a person experiences severe mood swings throughout the day. It is also known as manic depression. Mood swings can be high and low; it happens that the person might feel too happy or too sad; rather he can experience two extreme moody situations.
