The office (sitcom)

The popular American TV show is available for you to watch in India in the amazon prime video with a subscription. The first episode was aired in 2005 and ran for a good 9 seasons. Let's get into the topic. I have been watching this most happening TV show for a couple of months now. I must say to what I have seen; this show has actually worked for me.

The characters

The characters in this sitcom are just a handful, but each one of them has a well-defined depth to themselves. There are around 20 characters, and each one of them has its respective partners. Let us now dig into the relationships that happen on the show.

Micheal Scott x Jane

Steve Carell has pulled off this great role Micheal Scott, the branch manager of a paper company called Dunder Mifflin in Scranton. Melora Hardin has played the role of Jan Levinson, who is the corporate head of the same branch. There have been hints on the sexual tension between the two of them during the initial episodes later, which bursts out as both the characters get into a toxic relationship. The toxicity has been established in a very subtle way with several visuals.

Dwight x Angela x Andy

One of the comical characters of the show Dwight Schrute is played by Rainn Wilson. The character is a salesperson in the office. The countryside turned city person situation is handled impressively, and we are reminded about that then and there with his possession of weapons used in farms. This distinctive strict character gets into a hidden relationship with Angela, a part of the finance department. The whispered convos where they call each other monkey to keep their relationship as a secret continue to do that even after they are open about their relationship. There is an interference in this relationship by Andy Bernard, who appears in later seasons. Angela and Andy get engaged, but later, Andy calls off the wedding when he finds that there was still something left between Dwight and Angela. (spoiler alert) This love triangle comes to an end when the guys find out that Angela has been cheating on both of them. (Spoiler ends here)

Jim x Pam

The dream couple. Jim Halpert is a salesperson like Dwight and Andy. Whereas Pam, fondly called Pam burger, Pam cakes, Pamcaso, etc., is initially a receptionist who later becomes something else (trying so hard to avoid spoilers). They are the selling point of this whole thing. The chemistry between them will make you fall for those characters. They are the only characters that act sensibly while all others are wilding literally. The nuances that take place between these two are crafted like a painting. The subtle humor and lightness are the USP of this whole show. 

These three snippets of relationships are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many layers in them, and the reason this doesn't work for everyone is that we have all seen or came across the love genre generically or artificially, and this show breaks that. It shows how it is, in reality, to be with someone we love. Those who have seen only the former type will find it difficult to digest something like this, which feels much unconventional.

In hindsight, if you are looking for something different and legit hilarious, I hardly recommend you to watch "The office."
