Why the historic bridge will be demolished

The ship is 417 feet (127 metres) long and too tall to pass through the Koningshaven Bridge.

The mayor's spokeswoman confirmed the proposal to reporters, with Mr. Bezos paying for it through Oceanco.

The central portion of the Dutch city's bridge, known locally as De Hef, will be temporarily dismantled to allow the 130ft (40m) high boat to sail past, according to reports in Dutch media on Tuesday.

Because the steel bridge has a lengthy history and is now a national monument, the decision is divisive. It was previously closed for a significant renovation from 2014 to 2017, after which officials stated that it would not be demolished again.

According to the AFP news agency, the mayor's office stated that the idea was spurred by the jobs produced by the vessel's construction, and that the bridge will be reconstructed in its existing state.

"It's the only way to the sea," a representative for the mayor remarked.

Marcel Walravens, the project head for Rotterdam's municipal authorities, agreed, saying that finishing the yacht's construction elsewhere would be impractical.

Citing Rotterdam's reputation as the "European sea capital," he told Rainmond's website that the project was "very important" from an economic point of view.

"Shipbuilding and activity in this sector is an important pillar of the community," he said.

Walravens told a local newspaper that the project is likely to take place in the summer and authorities hope to remove and replace this section  within a few weeks.

Last year, details about ordering a luxury  yacht  built by Oceanco were revealed. The company has been tough on its customers, but Bloomberg's career with Bezos in 2021 seemed to support rumors that he would be the owner. According to

Boat International, this ship, known as the Y721,  will be the largest ship of its kind in the world. It is rumored to offer many extravagant features with a bespoke "support yacht" at the heliport.

The move has been criticized on Twitter by local Greens politician Stephen Leewis. He described "destroying our beautiful national monument" as "the bridge is too far".

Forbes estimates that the founder of Amazon  is worth more than $ 175 billion (£ 130 billion) and currently ranks him as the third wealthiest person in the world. Bezos is not only a giant in the e-commerce industry, but also owns the Washington Post  and the space company Blue Origin.

What do we know about Bezos yachts?

According to Bezos' new biography of Bloomberg News, the 417-foot (127 m) long ship will be built by Oceanco in the Netherlands. For the world's wealthiest man, who earned US $ 13 billion in one day in 2020, the cost of going to sea is estimated at around US $ 500 million (£ 350 million). His estimated net worth is now close to $ 200 billion.

The price does not include the small electric "support yacht" that Bezos will also purchase. The small yacht has a heliport Bezos girlfriend. TV presenter Lauren Sanchez is a trained helicopter pilot. The main yacht cannot support its heliport due to the three sail masts on the deck. According to experts, small yachts will also carry cars, luxury speedboats, and perhaps other goods such as submarines. According to Bloomberg, a top-secret superyacht project known as Y721 is expected to be completed by the end of next month. It's likely that Bezos' order was placed several years ago, since custommade ships like this can take around five years to build.
