The movie is based on a true story. The director's use of realism, underpinned by the premise that what happens to the 12-year-old Regan could happen to anyone, is what makes the movie truly unsettling. For example, the question about whether the Ouija board Regan uses was the cause of her possession is never answered.
Though many of us would have known or watched this movie, it is worthy to be on the banned Horror movies list. That said, the movie is still banned, and an HD version of it isn't to be easily found online either.
The film had already courted controversy in the US, where it had supposedly provoked fainting, vomiting and heart attacks in cinemas.
Short Story of the movie
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd -- levitating, speaking in tongues -- her worried mother seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert to help with the difficult job.

Many cast and crew were injured, some died, and unusual accidents delayed shooting. Production took twice as long as scheduled and cost almost three times the initial budget; the many mishaps have led to a belief that the film was cursed. The Exorcist was released in 24 theaters in North America in late December 1973 and two people who are shown dead in the film actually died after the shoot.
