WHY IS THAT APATHY VIJAY STILL A SUPERSTAR?

The south Indian film industry was the most dynamic for the last few decades. It had undergone many evolutions and had almost upgraded its quality to international standards. From patriotic and sentimental films, they emerged to a colorful era of romance and heroism. From there, they have reached realistic films, letting their camera roll behind the usual lives of streets and slums.

This change in the perspective of filmmaking was accepted with loud applause by the audience. But the same change had made some of the shining stars lose their grip. Mollywood action king Suresh Gopi is a great example of that. But many more people worked behind the camera, finding it hard to swallow this change.

This is where we have to talk about another king; a Tamil Rasa: THALPATHY VIJAY. His entrance to the film industry was marked in the colorful era that I mentioned before. But even after completing 64 movies successfully, he still exists on the throne with the same charm and youthfulness.

THE QUESTION

Now, let us come to the matter. The question is why Thalapathy Vijay is STILL called a superstar. The word STILL has two distinct relevance in this question. One is obviously, the change I mentioned before. Filmmakers like Vetrimaran and Karthik Subraj have absolutely changed the face of Tamil movies.

The second one is that; he has more critics among the people in the current scenario. The heroic mode of his films is widely criticized for being outdated and exaggerated.

But the irony is that still, the least his movie collects is 100 crore rupees. But, why? Many say that the amount a movie collects doesn’t show its success, but I oppose that. If films are made for people, they ought to be watched by them.

Being a film aspirant and an enthusiastic audient who missed none of the so-called `SUPERSTAR’S’ films for the last 20 years, let me jot down some of the reasons why Thalapathy Vijay is STILL a superstar:

1.Stereotyped stars.

I have talked about the change that was brought to the film industry. It is not true that today’s audience hates to see heroism on the silver screen; they hate it done by all. But some people just swiped it away as it was none of their business; Joseph Vijay was just one among them.

Thus, we can conclude that stars are stereotyped in the eyes of the audience. For what movie content Vijay was known for, audiences accept and appreciate it from him alone!

2.The victorious leader.

It is easily noticeable that his roles were of a leader, who we badly need in our real life. The duty of the savior is to help the needy; it continues in all the films, but the situation changes.

Think you are sitting hungrily in a place without knowing the language and without any money. There comes a gentleman, who comes close to you, talks with joy, and offers you many things other than food, and exits with a naughty smile, giving you a parcel of your favorite food. Won’t you feel a kind of devotion for him? The same happens here.

3.Emerging brilliance.

Newcomers are more in the south Indian film industry. Moreover, it is noticed that the newcomers have their own way of doing things. They have their own brilliance in filmmaking. But it is not easy for someone’s low-budget movies to get popular in a market where hundreds of movies are released every year.

So, the new-coming brilliant directors will look for an identity; in other words, a superstar film to show their talents. What they suffer is only that they have to write a script that suits the mannerism of the superstar.

Let me make it more clear with an example. Atley was a director who began his career assisting Sankar Sanmugam, the legend. Later on, he did some interesting movies like ‘Rajarani,’ but now he is known for movies like ‘there's, ‘mersal’ etc... He did for Thalapathy Vijay. But why? His talent and effort were the same for all his films, but the change in the platform made him more popular.

4.Crazy fans.

The word ‘fan’ was born with the word ‘crazy.’ These people give huge hope to film producers. They will die to make their favorite stars’ movies super-hit. For the same reason, most films reach the billionaire club without much effort.

We needn’t doubt about the fanbase of Thaalpathy Vijay or the most beloved Vijay Annan. They love his wits, the way he laughs, and his naughty - courage. If they have the taste, let them enjoy it! Beyond all criticism, if he continues his job on the same track, he has that public support that will not let him fall.

5.Public figure.

Being a celebrity is something quite different from being a public figure. A celebrity needn’t appear before the public, needn’t prove that he is a human rather than a star, and needn’t interfere in public issues, but a public figure should.

Thalapathy Vijay is obviously such a public figure who motivates, loves, cares, and supports the public with a more or less similar courageous flair that he depicts as a star.

To conclude, the film is a means through which a group of people conveys a story that impressed them to the public. Those who are impressed by that story will tell them from the whole public, and others will take it another way.

A film industry really needs superstars like Thalapathy Vijay, whose films become the reason for thousands of smiles, directly and indirectly. So let them continue their colorful journey vigorously.
