Why srilanka President resignation?

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has refused to accept Ranjith Siyambalapitiya's request to resign from the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament. 

Ranjith Siyambalapitiya had tendered his resignation in a letter to the President yesterday (06).

In his resignation letter, Siyambalapitiya said he decided to step down from his position following a decision made by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Parliamentary Group to remain independent.

However, the Head of State has requested not to step down from his position in order to maintain parliamentary democracy. 

Speaking further, Rajapaksa acknowledged that the people were facing a severe crisis and said that pacifying the public should be paramount. 

Governments cannot be changed in violation of the principles of democracy.

Speaking further, Rajapaksa acknowledged that the people were facing a severe crisis and said the priority should be to calm the people.

MPs should work to calm people down. Unfortunately, we can see some parties trying to take advantage that could be heard in protests demanding the President’s resignation, could be levelled against anyone in the might create the same situation in the 1988-1989 era, MP warned in Parliament yesterday

“Even if the President resigns, this slogan would not stop. It would be levelled against his successor as well. Then it would be used against including public servants. This is exactly what happened in the 1988-1989 era,” he said.
