Why sleep is essential for health*

Sleep and rest are essential not only for humans but for all living things, but it is a challenge to do it right in the current era.

It is through sleep that our body recovers from the fatigue of the day's work and gets refreshed.  Modern research also shows that there is a connection between the amount of sleep we get and the development of our body.

But thousands of years before this, our ancestors described the duration of sleep and the method of sleep in our books.   The correct way to sleep is on your left side.  Modern research also shows that sleeping in this way improves blood circulation to the heart.

As mentioned earlier, it is necessary for children to sleep at least 12 hours because of the relationship between sleep and our physical development.  8-10 hours for 5-15 year olds, 7 hours for 16-30 year olds, 6 hours for 30-50 year olds, 8 hours for older people and rest at other times is necessary.

It is best to sleep at night and wake up early in the morning, 1 hour before sunrise.  Due to this, our brain and other body parts get fresh and strong.  The 3 dosh as of Wadham, Pittas and Kappa work independently.

But now, due to the change in our lifestyle, the number of people waking up at night to go to work has increased.  The night work we do for our financial needs is affecting our health.  Also, because we keep looking at laptops and mobile phones at night, our eyes are affected and the time of sleep is varied, the normal functioning of the body affected by sleeplessness, blood pressure increases, and heart diseases occur.

The earth cools down at night.  Similarly, night is the best time for our body to get rid of the heat of labor and cool down completely.  So the body also cools down by sleeping at night.  In contrast, waking up at night and sleeping during the day increases body heat.  This causes sperm production in men and the menstrual cycle in women.  Due to this, childbearing is delayed.  Young and middle-aged people should avoid napping during the day.  But the elderly, children and sick people can take a rest during the day.

It is best to eat normally at night by 8 and go to bed by 10.  It will be difficult to get up early in the morning because of late sleep.

And a free cotton mattress will wick away body heat.  Sleeping on a cot will give you a cool and restful sleep.  Pom mattresses increase body heat and cause diseases such as fever, so it is better to avoid them and use natural cotton or free cotton mattress.

Also, due to lack of night sleep, diseases like depression, rheumatism, indigestion, headache, dizziness occur.  People suffering from insomnia can take an oil bath twice a week.

Oil bath is one of the important methods mentioned in our Sindhi medicine.  By rubbing the oil and taking a bath, the body will gain strength.  Headache.  Also, the blood flow of the body increases.  By rubbing the oil and letting it soak for a while, the nutrients of the medicine go into the body.  So, an oil bath can be done 2 times a week.  Our medical texts explain that it is good for men and children to take an oil bath on Wednesday-Saturday, and for women on Tuesday-Friday.  During an oil bath, it is necessary to avoid daytime sleep and eat fast food.

After food and sleep, exercise and sports play a major role in our health.  Our forefathers have told us about yoga exercises that give strength to the body and peace to the mind, and many games that improve our intelligence.  Some of our traditional sports are heroic games like Silambam, Sadugudu, Manjuvirattu and entertainment games like thayam, Pallanguzhi, Tattangal, word games, story telling, parampadam, and rope games.  These protect our physical health and improve our cognitive abilities.

Multilingual games increase children's mathematical ability, Thayam and Parampadam help children understand the ups and downs of life, rope play cleans the respiratory system and expels body waste, and riddle and word games increase children's thinking ability and speaking power.

So let's realize the importance of sleep to live a fresh and happy life and do it properly and live a prosperous life.
