Dieting is too often approached from the imminent failure mentality. Too many people have tried and failed on so many diets in the past that they try the next new diet with the absolute knowledge that they will fail at this attempt too. Guess what? They are going to. Henry Ford once said, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're always right." If you think you're going to fail on this diet, you're setting yourself up for failure before you even take your first bite away. Think about it before you start because only a true masochist could take pleasure in perpetuating this vicious cycle without stopping to wonder why none of the other fad diets worked for him. Henry Ford also said, "Failure is just an opportunity to start over smarter." In case you were wondering, I'd say his words are quite profound. Seriously, if you don't look into the reasons for your failures, you're surely dooming yourself to repeat them, and if you're already planning to fail, why the hell would you even try?
You are the only person who can control your urge to eat. You are the only one who can pay attention and understand when you eat out of emotional satisfaction and when you eat out of necessity. You and only you can get out of your chair and stand up. You are the only one who can take responsibility for the condition you are in. There are medical exceptions, but even in these situations, if you try one diet after another and fail again and again, you have to realize at some point that it's most likely not the diets that aren't working. We all have to be responsible for our successes and failures in life. It's no different when it comes to diet. There are few better feelings in the world than having someone notice and praise your efforts. Unfortunately, if you're very obese, it can take a little longer for people to really notice how much weight you've lost. Too many men and women give up simply because no one noticed and that's a real shame. Give your dietary practices a chance to work before deciding they are a flop and being surprised by the roaring success. The truth is, very few people take responsibility for their diet and weight loss goals. This means that too many people give up without even bothering to make an effort. If you're having trouble taking responsibility for your diet plans, perhaps you'd do well to go on a diet with a partner. This helps you not only set goals but also meet and overcome challenges along the way. A partner can also benefit from the partnership, as they will be challenged and feel the need to perform better than if they were dieting alone.
You need to hold yourself accountable for your diet and weight loss goals to achieve lasting results. If you haven't had success with fad diets in the past, then maybe it's time to incorporate some degree of responsibility and make it happen.
