Today it is easy to find the latest price of gold, online, the financial part of the morning paper, market news on television, and just like ... Of all the things one uses as a form of money, gold is the most prominent. It does not matter how precious it is or how rare it is. It is important that one chooses this property as a standard as a global resource. In fact, gold is one of the few most popular metals. Today it is easy to find the latest gold price, from the internet, the financial part of the morning paper, the market news on television, and even as a text message on your mobile phone. But this was not always the case. For decade's the price of gold's gold has stabilized - so investors have not realized the importance of following price changes. But in recent years, the value of gold has changed, and much of the interest has been lost on precious metals. What was once less than $100 in the 1940s is now over $600. This has led investors to move around at higher prices. The price of gold is linked to the strength of the US dollar. Given the rapid rise in gold over the past decade, many investors believe it is a good time to buy and guess. But remember that gold is a commodity, and it does not always earn interest like a bank bond. Your profit will depend on whether the sale price is higher than the purchase price, less than any brokerage fees. So if the price of gold goes up, you should be concerned about the value of the US dollar. This is because gold grows as the dollar depreciates. Since we are at $600 each I ounce, you can be sure that the value of the American dollar is very low. This is called a lack of confidence. Should you invest gold today? We believe it is a safe bet. Given current world conditions, as well as the period before the 2008 US elections, gold will only grow in value. The idea that gold preserves wealth is even more important in an economic environment where investors are faced with a declining U.S. dollar and rising inflation. Historically, gold has served as a hedge against both of these scenarios. With rising inflation, gold typically appreciates. When investors realize that their money is losing value, they will start positioning their investments in a hard asset that has traditionally maintained its value. The 1970s present a prime example of rising gold prices in the midst of rising inflation.9
The reason gold benefits from a declining U.S. dollar is because gold is priced in U.S. dollars globally. There are two reasons for this relationship. First, investors who are looking at buying gold (i.e., central banks) must sell their U.S. dollars to make this transaction. This ultimately drives the U.S. dollar lower than global investors seek to diversify out of the dollar. The second reason has to do with the fact that a weakening dollar makes gold cheaper for investors who hold other currencies. This results in greater demand from investors who hold currencies that have appreciated relative to the U.S. dollar.
