WHY SELF-AWARENESS MATTERS ?

     Self-awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, emotions, likes and dislikes.  Self-awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them at the moment.

     Self-awareness develops systematically from birth through the life span, and it is a major factor for the development of general inferential processes.

     Various environmental cues and situations induce awareness of the self, such as mirrors, an audience, or being videotaped or recorded.

BENEFITS OF SELF-AWARENESS

     Self-awareness helps us in understanding our strengths and weaknesses.  It is often a first step to goal setting. Self-awareness is important because when we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are empowered to make changes and to build our areas of strength as well as identify areas where we would like to  make improvements.

     Developing self-awareness can help us to recognize when we are stressed or under pressure.   It is also often a prerequisite for effective communication and interpersonal relations.

     As you develop self-awareness, you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind.  Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions.  Self-awareness is one of the attributes of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success.

     Relationships are easy until there is emotional turmoil.  This is the same whether you are at work or otherwise.  When you can change the interpretation in your mind of what you think, you can change your emotions and sift the emotional quality of your relationships.  When you can change the emotions in your relationships.  When you can change the emotions in your relationships, you open up entirely new possibilities in your life.

     Having a clear understanding of your thought and behavior patterns helps you understand other people.  This ability to empathize facilitates better personal and professional relationships.

     Self-awareness is the first step in creating what you want and mastering your thoughts.  Where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions, personality and behaviors determine where you go in life.

      Self-awareness is the means to identify your unconscious patterns and raise them in your consciousness so that they can be changed.  It is through self-awareness that you identify and change the underlying core beliefs that drive destructive behaviors and create happiness.

DEVELOPING SELF-AWARENESS

     Self-awareness involves developing an understanding of many dimensions of the self.  Knowledge of the self it comprises, of many conceptual dimensions, including multiple forms of intelligence and a variety of personality-related factors.  This topic focuses on only five important areas of self-awareness namely emotional intelligence, values, learning style attitude towards change, and core self-evaluation.

     Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to manage oneself and to manage relationships with others.  It identifies the extent to which people are able to recognize and control their own emotions, as well as recognize and respond appropriately to the emotions of others.

     Personal values are an individual's personal standards that define what is good or bad, worthwhile or worthless, desirable or undesirable, true or untrue, moral or immoral.  Values are used to make a wide range of decisions, and often become most apparent when they are directly challenged.
