Why Scheduling Your Day the Night Before Drastically Boosts Your Productivity

What you do during the day prior to it is just as important as what you do in the morning. In actual fact, the way you conduct yourself the night before can make it more likely you'll complete what you're trying to achieve on any given day.

The method you employ does not matter. I'm of the opinion that calendars and calendars are more efficient than do lists however there is a section of people who believe in to-do lists or, as it's known," the Ivy Lee Method:

Write down each day the 5 most important items you'll need to complete every day. Then, begin your day by focusing on those five items. You can also put the 5 tasks in your schedule. It's irrelevant as long as these five things are completed.

The most efficient productivity strategies are actually fairly simple once you break them down. However, we continue to search for ways to improve our lives or productive "hacks" because doing so can make us feel satisfied. If you're spending all day reading articles on productivity, such as this one, you're probably not doing anything productive. The only way to figure out if something is effective for you is to put it into practice and observe what happens.

I'm always experimenting with productivity tools because a lot of the systems which have brought me to where I am today haven't worked equally. The exact tools that helped me to complete my first book in just 6 months do not allow me to achieve similar to the manuscript I'm currently working on. In the process, I've had to revisit certain aspects of my daily routine of 8 steps. Sometimes, my routine gets overwhelming. But my failures have always been due to insufficient planning for the day prior.

When I first created this post I put the five things I wanted to complete in my journaling software the evening prior. At around 9:30 am, I'd accomplished everything on my list.

If you schedule your day in advance, you'll be stunned by the extent to which your productivity will increase dramatically.

If you're not clear on what you're trying your best to accomplish on a given day, you'll be occupied but not very productive. In the event that you schedule your day at night can accomplish more within a shorter amount of time. Additionally, you'll experience more flow.

My most enjoyable mornings are a little like this

  1. For an hour, you can read

  2. Write for one hour

  3. Exercise, surf, or snowboard for a couple of hours

  4. Interview people

  5. Prepare for the upcoming talks

  6. Social media and email

If you establish a framework to guide your working days and schedules, you'll be more likely to fill your days with productive work that will add value to your daily life. The best thing about a framework is that it's not a rigid structure. It is able to be adjusted daily and according to your preferences. It allows you to be flexible to changes in your schedule. Even though I know precisely what the first two hours of my day look like, preparing it out the night before can help minimize the stress of making decisions.

The first hour of your day is the most important. It establishes the tone for the rest of your day is going to be like. If you are spending the first half hour of the day being distracted by buzzes, pings, notifications, and dopamine, it will look similar. However, If you're spending the first half hour of your day focusing on what consider your top priorities, the energy will be carried throughout your day. It's a pattern that I've seen over and over.

If you have planned your day in the evening you start, you can be sure about what you'll actually do when you go to work in the morning.
