The Russian Federation and Ukraine are currently in a state of war: The Russian-Ukrainian War began in 2014 following the Russian occupation of Crimea from Ukraine. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine across the vast border.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, relations between the next two countries have had periods of relations, tensions, and open hostility. In the early 1990 Ukraine's policy was dominated by the desire to secure its sovereignty and independence, followed by a policy that limited cooperation with the EU, Russia, and other powerful policies.
Relations between the two countries have been strained since the Shadow Revolution, which toppled Ukrainian President-elect Viktor Yanukovych and his supporters, for refusing to sign a political agreement and a free trade agreement with the European Union that gained popular support in Ukraine's parliament. The post-revolutionary Ukrainian government wished to give the country a future within the EU and NATO, rather than continue to play a sensitive diplomatic mission to balance its economic and security interests with those of Russia, the EU, and NATO members. In 2004 the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia joined the EU, followed by Bulgaria and Romania in 2007 (see Member State) and the European Union. The Russian government fears that Ukraine's EU-NATO membership will undermine the western wall of the alliance by preventing Russia from entering the Black Sea. With South Korea and Japan allied with the US, the Russian government was concerned that Russia was being cordoned off with superpowers. After the Dignity Revolution, Russia supported various troops from the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic in Ukraine's most important economic war in the Donbass region, on its eastern border with Russia. This region has a large Russian population. By early 2022 the Russian-Ukrainian War had killed more than 13,000 people, and brought Western sanctions on Russia.
In 2019, amendments were made to the Constitution of Ukraine, which included the irreversible backlash of a strategic course on EU membership and NATO membership. Throughout 2021 and 2022, the deployment of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border has exacerbated tensions between the two countries and disrupted bilateral relations, with the United States sending a strong message that the attacks will have serious consequences for Russia's economy. 2022, Russia began an attack on Ukraine.
Kyivan
Kyiv served as the capital of Kyivan, ruled by the Varangian dynasty Rurikid, who gradually became laicization. Both Russia and Ukraine claim their allegiance to Russia (also known as Kyivan or Ancient), a political movement that united several nations and ethnic groups in the 10th century under the Byzantine church. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia states that was experiencing divisions among the emperors, and their history is riddled with controversy over nobles. According to ancient Russian texts, Kyiv, the modern capital of Ukraine, was proclaimed the mother of the Russian cities as the capital of the mighty Russian medieval region, which preceded modern-day Russia and Ukraine. Discussion on the extent to which Russians and Ukrainians share the same origin can lead to heated arguments.
