London: As the election for Britain's new Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader is underway, there is intense competition within the party. Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian origin, is leading the field. As a former finance minister, even though he knows financial intricacies, he will not be able to win this election so easily, according to reports.
Due to the economic crisis and unemployment that has gripped Britain, the country's politics are in extreme confusion. 58 own party MPs resigned against the Prime Minister in protest. Boris Johnson has announced that he will step down as Prime Minister. Due to this, the competition for the next Prime Minister is intense. Political commentators have recalled the events of the past as the current election is not only for the Prime Minister but also for the leadership of the Conservative Party. Previous British Prime Ministers Alec Douglas-Home, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, David Cameron and Theresa May are not expected to be elected Prime Minister on behalf of the party. But he succeeded as Prime Minister. Similarly, the public did not directly vote for John Major, Theresa May and Alec Douglas-Home. But he won the power contest for the leadership of the party and became the prime minister. In 1964, there was a contest for the leadership of the party. There were no democratic practices in those days as they are now. The members of the party elect the leaders after a consultative meeting called 'Magic Circle'. This is how Alec Douglas-Home served as Prime Minister for one year (1963-64). He was later defeated by the Labor Party candidate in the general election. It was only after this that many changes were brought in to contest elections from the party. In fact, the Conservative Party implemented the practice of requiring internal party elections to elect a new leader of the party only in 1964-65. Even Margaret Thatcher, who is known to have given an excellent government in the history of Britain, was elected as the party leader in this way and then won the general election in 1979. So there are so many problems in taking over as the new Prime Minister of Britain.
