Why reading is important?

Why is Reading important?

Article by Suraksha

Reading helps us in many areas of our life, and it has tons of benefits that help us enhance our living way. Reading a good book can change our lives in a great way. One right book can make us the ideal person who we always wanted to be.

Walt Disney said, "there is more treasure in books than in all the pirates loot on treasure island," reading books can help us achieve our real treasures.

Though there are many advantages of reading a book, here are the top five scientifically-proven benefits of reading books.

Top five benefits of reading-

1. Reading keeps our brain healthy:

When MRI scans of the brain were taken by the researchers, it showed that reading involves a complete network of circuits and signals in the brain. That network gets stronger and sophisticated as our reading ability increases. This was totally true in the somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that senses movement.

2. Reading builds our vocabulary:

Mathew's effect sums up the idea "rich get richer and poor get poorer." This concept applies as much to vocabulary as it does to money. Researchers found that the people who read books regularly beginning at a young age gradually develop a large vocabulary size. And this vocabulary size can influence many areas of our life, starting from the standardized tests at school to college admissions and job opportunities.

3. Reading helps us sleep better:

Doctors suggest that reading should be a part of our daily sleep routine. It helps to prepare us for a good night's rest. If we have trouble falling asleep, we should read somewhere other than our bedroom.

4. Reading makes us more empathetic:

Reading helps us to see the world from other's perspectives. It can make us cry and laugh, and it connects us to every word, which makes us more empathetic. It makes us understand things and get behind other's eyeballs. "That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet", this famous quote from Jhumpa Lahiri's book 'The Namesake' holds the true sense of reading and emphasizing.

5. Reading helps to reduce stress and alleviate depression symptoms:

In 2009 a group of researchers in The United States studied the effect of reading and yoga on students. The study found that thirty minutes of reading lowered the blood pressure, heart rate, and psychological distress just as r effectively as yoga did.

British philosopher sir Roger Scruton once wrote, "consolation of imaginary things is not an imaginary consolation." People with depression symptoms often feel isolated and estranged from everyone else, and thats the feeling books can lessen. Reading books never let us feel alone and lonely.

Although there are tons of reasons to read, the main reason is to gain knowledge. Reading thirty minutes a day can change our lives; it can bring a positive impact on our life. So, let's start reading from today so that we can make our better tomorrow.

" A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies."

Keep reading, keep gaining, keep growing.
