When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet in private on Friday for a regional conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, trade and geopolitics will be the topics of discussion.
The 22nd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of State, which starts on Thursday, will be attended by Mr. Putin and Prime Minister Modi.
This is the bloc's first in-person meeting in two years, dispelling COVID worries and giving all eight of its leaders a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get together outside the summit and speak face-to-face about crucial global and regional problems of shared concern.

Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov had earlier been quoted by the official Russian news agency TASS as saying that "a conversation on the international agenda with Modi will also take place; the sides will discuss issues of strategic stability, the situation in the Asia-Pacific Region, and, of course, cooperation within major multilateral formats, such as the UN, the G20, and the SCO."
"This is particularly crucial since India will chair the G20 and head the SCO in 2023," Mr. Ushakov told reporters on Tuesday. India will also preside over the UN Security Council in December.
When President Putin visited India in December 2021, the two leaders spoke in July and discussed how the choices made during that visit were being put into practise. Prior to that, on February 24, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, PM Modi and Mr. Putin spoke on the phone.
Leaving for Samarkand, Uzbekistan to attend the SCO Summit, which will see the sharing of ideas on a wide variety of regional and global concerns, was how Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his trip on Twitter on Thursday.
PM Modi stated in his pre-departure statement that he was looking forward to sharing views on current regional and international challenges as well as on the growth and further strengthening of diversified and mutually beneficial collaboration within the grouping.
China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan are the eight nations that make up the SCO, which has its headquarters in Beijing.
