Why PM Modi meets SoftBank, Suzuki, NEC Corp, Uniqlo leadership in Japan?

In Tokyo, the Prime Minister met Masayoshi Son, Founder and Board Member of SoftBank Corporation, to evaluate the company's role in the startup sector. They discussed the company's future involvement in key areas such as technology, energy and finance. PM Modi and Son also discussed various reforms made to make doing business in India easier. Specific proposals to increase investment have been forwarded to SoftBank. The Prime Minister also met with Osamu Suzuki, Chief Advisor of Suzuki Motors. He recalled Suzuki's domestic associations and contributions, and the transformative role of Suzuki Motors in the automotive industry. Suzuki Motor Gujarat Pvt Ltd and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd are among the applicants approved under the Production Related Incentives (PLI) Scheme in the Automotive and Auto Parts sector. They also discussed further investment opportunities in India, including the construction of electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities and recycling centers. Strategies for establishing regional innovation systems were also discussed, including technology development through the Japan-India Manufacturing Institute (JIM) and Japanese Language Courses (JEC).

PM Modi also met Dr. Nobuhiro Endo, chairman, NEC Corporation and appreciated the corporation’s role in India’s telecommunication sector, especially in the ChennaiAndaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) and KochiLakshadweep Islands (KLI) OFC projects. Investment opportunities under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme were also discussed. Reforms that have been undertaken to enable the ease of doing business in India including in industrial development, taxation and labour, as well as opportunities in new and emerging technologies were discussed too. In Tokyo, PM Modi also met Tadashi Yanai, Chairman, President & CEO of Fast Retailing. The rapidly growing textile and apparel market of India and investment opportunities under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme were discussed. Reforms were discussed to make it easier for foreign investors to do business, including in the areas of industrial development, infrastructure, taxation and labor. Discussed Uniqlo's greater participation in India's ambition to become a textile manufacturing hub, particularly the use of technology in textile manufacturing. Prime Minister Modi also invited Uniqlo to participate in the PMMitra initiative aimed at strengthening the textile sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met top business leaders on Day 1 of his twoday Japan visit. Ahead of the Quad Summit 2022, the prime minister met the CEOs of prominent Japanese firms who have earned global recognition.PM Modi met the chairperson of NEC Corporation Dr Nobuhiro Endo in Tokyo. During the interaction, he hailed NEC's role in India's telecommunication sector and discussed opportunities in new and emerging technologies in India, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

According to the officials in PMO, after meeting Modi, Suzuki said: "Reforms undertaken by PM Modi are indescribable and these reforms are changing India into a 'Model Landscape' while the self reliance (Aatmanirbhar) theme is supported by the Japanese's investors very strongly." Modi also held two other meetings with Tadashi Yanai, Chairman, President and CEO of Uniqlo, a Japanese casual wear designer, manufacturer and retailer; and Founder of SoftBank Group Masayoshi Son. During their meeting, Yanai appreciated the entrepreneurial zeal of the people of India and said: "We can focus on end-to end to end products i.e. from plant to design to fabric. We want to achieve growth in India.
